Alto Grayslake
Alto may be ok if a person is mobile, but other than that not. The second day my mom was there, someone defecated on her bathroom walls. It couldn't have been my mom, since she couldn't get up on her own. The bad thing is that none of the staff was going to clean it. The room smelled absolutely horrible and they told me the cleaning staff left already (this was 5pm). I had to keep going to different people until finally a nurse cleaned it since the aides refused. If I wasn't there, they would have left it until the next day. My mom got fractured back there, and they said no fall occurred. I got there and I could see my mom was in extreme pain. They were only going to give her Tylenol and said the doctor was not able to be reached. I made them call an ambulance and sure enough she had fractured vertebrae with ligament damage. My mom thought she had to pee a lot and the staff would get mad because they were short handed. My mom's memory was bad, but she did remember traumatic things. When her back got fractured, I asked if she fell and she said no, which matched what Alto said. However she said "They were mean to me when I couldn't pee". Fractured backs could occur just from odd movements with osteoporosis, but my mom also has ligament damage so something happened, which was denied. I am guessing that the staff may have put her back into her chair aggressively after she didn't pee, but I will never know. If I was to do it all over, I would have a camara installed in the room. It is probably the only way to better protect your loved one.

Hello and thank you for sharing your concerns about your mother’s experience at Alto Grayslake. First and foremost, we’re deeply sorry that this situation caused distress for you and your mother, as this is not the standard of care we strive to provide. We take all feedback seriously and want to address the points you raised. We have reviewed the events and, based on our records, it appears that some of the concerns mentioned may have taken place prior to the current leadership team and management changes at the community. For instance, the back issue you referenced occurred before we took over the community, and the resident’s doctor confirmed it did not occur at Alto Grayslake. If it had, we would have followed all necessary protocols and reported the incident immediately. Regarding the bathroom incident, we understand how upsetting that situation must have been. To clarify, this involved a resident in their own unit, and while our housekeeping staff had already left for the day, a nurse stepped in to assist as it was after hours. Our team works hard to ensure that all cleanliness standards are maintained, even in difficult situations, and we regret any confusion this caused. We also want to reassure you that we support our residents in all aspects of their care, including toileting assistance. We have ongoing staff training to ensure that our team members handle every situation with compassion and professionalism. That said, it’s concerning to hear that there was no communication with our leadership team during this time, as we prioritize open dialogue with families. We encourage any family members who have concerns to reach out to us directly so we can address them promptly. We cannot alleviate any problems if we are simply unaware. We appreciate your feedback and will continue to work towards providing the highest level of care for all residents. If you would like to discuss this further or if there’s anything else we can do, please don’t hesitate to contact our management team. We’d love the opportunity to discuss any of these situations in their entirety to make any progress we can towards a solution - that’s always our focus! Please take care.

Excellent Facilty and Staff - I Highly Recommend
The staff there was very nice and accommodating. Especially Kate. I heard that she was retiring though. The service from the staff at Alto made my mother's stay there so much easier. And the facility itself is top notch.

Definitely recommended
The staff at Alto Grayslake are very friendly and helpful. The move in process was easy. Housekeeping was good. They cleaned the rooms once a week and laundry is done once a week. Daily activities including bingo, games, special events that includes family. The food is very good. They post daily lunch and dinner items, but you can also order off of a menu. I would definitely recommend Alto Grayslake to anyone looking for an assisted living arrangement!

I'm very pleased with my mother's transition from my care to Alto
Mom feels at home at Alto. We enjoy visiting her there. It's a very warm & welcoming atmosphere. Mom really enjoys the socializing. I'm happy for her and relieved to have such a caring team around her especislly after I was her primary caregiver for 4.5 years in her home. Couldn't be more pleased with Alto and the staff.

One of the main reasons we chose this facility over others was because of the men's club that they have. They also have a great variety of activities provided for the residents.

Very good, not over the top concierge type communication. But very responsive to questions and needs. I picked this community because of the type of care, facility amenities (sun room, green house, floor layout), and cost was fair.

A great option for a loved one.
Staff is very friendly and attentive to family member's needs. Their attention to detail stands out compared to other facilities we have had experience with. For respite, there is typically, a two week minimum stay, but they worked with us on the minimum stays because of the number of stays we will be meeting in the future. I would recommend Alto Grayslake to other families looking.

Happy with our choice, friendly atmosphere
We chose Anthology of Grayslake because of the closeness to my house and we also liked the way it looked and felt when you walked in. The people are all very friendly and it really is a nice place to be. The staff and residents are super inclusive and they make you feel very welcome. We have come to know a lot of the residents here. I would recommend Anthology of Grayslake to others looking.

Don't trust your loved one in this facility
They did a good job with explaining, what they thought their services were, which was completely the opposite. They had limited activities for my loved one. There was limited staff to take my loved one, to participate in the activities. They need to do a better job with matching residents with someone, who handle their cognitive needs. The food was horrible, and was often cold. Overall, It was a bad experience.

Wouldn't Recommend
We thought it was good in the beginning, but there were things occurring we didn't know about at first. I would not recommend them. We experienced theft - our loved one's rings were literally taken right off of her hand. They were short in staff, and she was not getting the are she needed. They said they would do things and never did them. One Friday night, her fire alarm battery kept beeping in her room, and they told her she would have to deal with it until Monday when maintenance was there. We ended up having to take care of it ourselves. If a person didn't have family able to monitor things, I can't imagine what it would be like. For a very fragile population, it's sad that they don't improve their services.

wholeheartedly recommend
The staff have been very good to our loved one, they get her up and walking which has resulted in her being less dependent on their assistance and more independent. Sometimes our loved one complains about how "hard" they are working her but the results are very positive. We really appreciate their accountability and when they do make a mistake they own up to it immediately. There are a lot of different activities, tons of people coming and going, different musical entertainment and field trips.

My review of Anthology of Grayslake
Our family was able to do an in person tour, but it was in the evening so we did not see a lot of activities going on and there were still some restrictions. However we did get to see a lot of the community, but the value for cost was just a little higher than what we were looking for.

Not a place for Alzheimer care
This is not a place that’s you should consider for a loved on. It has frequent staff turnover, no transparency in what is going on. Zero communication and dismissive and condescending administration. The staff seems to have no support , the memory care floor looks like its mostly empty and dark. No engagement or activities for the residents in memory care. My Mother would often have someone else’s clothes on even though we would inform the staff every time it happened. I would give it zero stars , doesn’t even rate a 1. We moved my Mom out as soon as we could, and I recommend anyone with a family member there do the same. I gave the staff 3 stars but not administration, they rate zero.

Tips for evaluating your community options

Safety is a primary concern when seniors and their families look for Assisted Living. To ensure that a community meets your needs and expectations, we recommend that seniors and family members:

  • Tour the location: Touring allows you to speak to current residents and staff, and helps you confirm the accuracy of the community description and photos. Use our touring checklist to help guide your visit.

  • Confirm the availability of required services: Before you commit, make sure that the community offers all the services your senior needs, and that those services can be provided within your budget.

  • Know the Illinois regulations for Assisted Living: Each state has its own laws and inspections processes to ensure seniors reside in a safe environment. Depending on your state, you may even be able to look up inspection reports for the community(ies) you’re considering. Learn more about Illinois regulations for Assisted Living.
