Dad loves Brookdale. His studio apartment is large enough for not only his bed, dresser and easy chair; he also has a large desk, mini fridge and two additional storage cabinets. The staff hung dozens of his favorite framed family photos the day he moved in making his new home feel like home. The staff is awesome and everyone goes out of their way to exceed his needs whether it's their personal job or not. There's always someone available for assistance on any day at any time. Dad loves the food at Brookdale. His floor's small, intimate dining room is so much nicer than a large, noisy dining hall at other facilities. We packed snacks for him when he moved in and he never touched them. He wins candy at Bingo but is never wanting after his delicious meals. Bingo is one of several activities Dad enjoys. He is so busy that it's hard to find him in his room when we call. There's an outing every week with a great variety of places to visit. The van is large and comfortable and will accommodate various disabilities. The management is open to ideas and suggestions and holds frequent discussions to hear what residents want added to the amenities at Brookdale. I've never heard anyone say "no, we cannot do that". It's always "let's see how we can make that happen". We, his family, are so grateful that Dad is at Brookdale. We looked at many other facilities and this is the one that fits his needs and personality the best. He will likely need to transition to memory care at some point. Brookdale has that resource right next door.

He was happy there, and enjoyed most of the staff (95%+). The rooms were clean, spacious, and kept up throughout his stay. [name removed] the receptionist was very kind and I appreciated her (As was [name removed]). The food looked delightful and was presented very well. Unfortunately he was on a puréed diet. Everyone was respectful and the overall building had a pleasant feeling to it. If someone I loved, or even myself, needed assisted living I would recommend Brookdale at the top of my list.

What we like the most about the community is the friendly staff but they are short handed a lot. Having a lot of turnover with staff at the moment. He's enjoying the three meals a day for sure.

Brookdale was very clean! Everyone was really nice and helpful and they offered several fun activities to choose from. My Dad especially enjoyed the food. I wish he would've been there for more than a week and a half to enjoy it more.

So we chose Brookdale which had been our second choice. The facility is noticeably five years older than when my grandma was there. It's not what I would call great, but it's good enough. They will charge for things that aren't needed if you're not watching, and their billing is not itemized the way you'd think it was. The people are mostly very good. The food is great. The rooms are way too warm and individual rooms heat cannot be changed. My mom just needed a little time and rehab before going home, but she would not be against going back if something happened to keep her from being able to stay in her house again.

We moved Dad into Brookdale Assisted Living a couple months ago. Dad has some short term memory loss but otherwise is in good health. We lost Mom in 2020 and since then Dad has been lonely and wasn’t taking good care of his health or his home. He was scammed three times that we know of and lost most of his life savings. He had a stroke which was a wake up call to us kids that Dad needed to be somewhere that would provide a safe environment. We had talked about it a lot the past few years but he didn’t want to lose his independence. He visited Brookdale, met the staff and enjoyed lunch with some residents. They invited him to social events before he moved in which made him feel welcome and valued. He loves his suite, he loves his neighbors, he loves the variety of activities and he really loves the food. He made the decision to give up his car after a few weeks and hasn’t missed it. We kids are so relieved that Dad is happy and safe.

I'd give them a 5+ the staff is friendly and people are very helpful and the place is very clean up kept and they have the best maintenance I have ever seen. I broke my pelvis when I came home from the hospital of course I could not drive anymore so the staff would take and buy what I needed and bring it to me and I would pay them for it. I also know that I am driving. Need help getting my walker into the car so they come out put my walker in the car and when I come home, I call and they come out and take it out for me and set it Up, there are many other little things that they do that is very very helpful. I cannot say I enough about the staff here at Heritage house Gates. The residents are so very friendly too.

My mother entered Brookdale Portage for a respite stay. After touring a few places, Brookdale felt the closest to “home”. My mother enjoyed her stay and looks forward to visiting the friends she made there. I am very impressed with both their services and the caring staff they have there.

It has been comfortable, more space in the room then what I was expecting. The staff overall have been pleasant. Being able to have my dog here has been a treat. The in-house therapy has been wonderful.

Their onboarding is terrible. They do not accommodate meal requests. If a resident wants to eat in their room is a [fee charged] charge. If the resident has a very picky pallet they are not accommodating. The activities are all on the lower level which was confusing for my mom on how to get there. I didn't feel their staff was very welcoming in making my mom feel like this was her home. In [date removed] my mom had an episode that they couldn't control. My mom ended up inpatient geriatric evaluation and was diagnose with two kinds of dementia. We then moved her to a memory care until. Their bookkeeping of accounts was not very well done. I know they had some big staff changes about the time we moved my mom out so it's probably a lot different there now. I know Brookdale was a 5 star rating. I would not give them that for at the time my mom was there.

I would say they were a beautiful facility with an awesome Executive Director and welcoming staff. They did a wonderful job caring for my father until the end. I would recommend this community to other families. It is in a great area. I was able to take my dad for walks in the Fall.

The overall community is clean. However, my mom's room is RARELY cleaned - except by me. Also there has been a $600 a month increase which is astronomical. Especially for someone on fixed income.

we needed a place where mom would be safe, have a very friendly place that would solve our problems of mom falling and someone to make sure she gets all of her meds and a clean and happy surrounding. Brookdale has more than met our goals. She even can have her cat!

Treated poorly by the management staff. The facility sent a nurse to interview my mother. The nurse stated she would be a good fit for assisted living and did not need memory care. The management staff used notes from a hospital stay 5 years ago to over ride that recommendation and try and force us into memory care (more money, less socialization). My mother was a Brookdale resident in assisted living for a couple of months previously and had no issues. Her current dr's also don't think she needs memory care. The impersonal way the management staff has worked with our family is very unsettling. We are speaking with other facilities that have approached the situation much differently thus far. I'm very disheartened by the management's approach with our family and hope that others can avoid this situation.

The community had promised a lot during the tour and orientation; however, they haven't been able to fulfill these promises due to staffing. As a family member you really need to be an advocate due to the staffing shortage in healthcare overall right now. My loved one enjoys the activities offered. The community is willing to accommodate the residents requests for food such as a grilled cheese sandwich or something additional, if they don' like what is being served.

I would encourage you not to take your loved one to Brookdale Portage. The communication was horrible and they weren't accommodating to the residents. It didn't seem that my loved one's bathroom was cleaned more than once. This was disappointing to us. It seemed there was always some type of excuse with them. There were some staff that were wonderful to work with though. The activities director was great and she worked hard at getting my loved one involved in activities. The onboarding experience was horrible for us at this community. They never read the choices of meal options to my loved one.

We visited Brookdale Memory Care Portage with dad and thought the facility was top notch. I felt welcomed by the staff and was very impressed with the food and activity selection. We are moving forward with the placement process and am so thankful we found a great place for dad. I love the socialization time with other residents and the large size of the rooms compared to other places we have seen.
