Our experience

Keep in mind that my dad went there to die and did not use a lot of the offerings. There was little interaction due to my dads wishes. Based off of our short experience, I would recommend them to others looking.

Independence Court review

It would have probably been better if we didn't move her there when the entire staff was in the middle of changing over. It was very disorganized. Many days I went in to see my mom, and her pure wick was never cleaned. We had to do that. During the day, they didn't even have the pure wick hooked up. Most of the staff was friendly. Some of them didn't want to be bothered. The nurses that took care of her were a 5. They were great advocating for her, and taking care of her. The meals and dining room are are 5. The kitchen staff is a 5 also. Activities were wonderful that category is a 5. The cost was a little pricey.

Our Experience

The management staff are very nice. Especially, [name removed]. There is high turnover in the nursing staff, which creates a lot of confusion regarding meds and specific care needs. The pharmacy is awful and consistently over charges. The evening staff are poor.

I really liked having my mother-in-law at Independence Court. The staff always communicated with me. When she got real bad and hospice was called in, someone called me daily.

Cost not worth what is included

Apart from the staff being friendly, what's available for entertainment and living there as a whole, was disappointing. My experience touring started out well, but as time went on, one will see, if you're on the bottom secured unit, like a Tier 3, as my family was, there's nothing but one long table, puzzles, a little radio, and a tv. You don't even have access to the music room. No one should pay this much with little to no entertainment. Some items that weren't supposed to be accessible to psych patients were. The psych wasn't as safe and secured as one would deem it to be. The community should definitely have more activities, more tables, chairs, for the secured unit on the first floor. They definitely need more entertainment. Little staffing was noticed, as well. Because of the pricing, I wouldn't recommend unless they had more activities.

Our family had an in person tour experience with Independence Court of Monroeville and overall it was a nice tour experience but compared to another community we looked out for our loved one, this was just not going to be the best fit

Friendly and caring staff

We rate the overall experience a 4 because I see and am told they are short staffed in some ways. The cleanliness receives 4 stars only because my brother's room could be cleaner at times. But, it is not grimy at all, and the entire facility never has an odor. The staff without fail is always courteous. My brother is well cared for. His meds are given on time, and the nursing staff is very knowledgeable about his condition and his needs. Whenever there is an issue I am immediately notified. My brother never complains about his meals and the food has been good when I've eaten there. With the activities, I think this is where the staffing shortage is most noticeable. However, my brother is often reluctant to go to activities, but the staff often will talk him into participating.

If you love your family members do not send them to Independence Court. The staff ignore the residents. I would not choose them again, and I would not recommend them to other families.

My tour of Independence Court of Monroeville

We toured this facility and it was a lovely place! The facility was very clean and the staff was very friendly. We had a really good tour here. Everyone was very nice with us, it was a good experience. They also followed up with us a few times after the tour. Unfortunately, it was above our budget, but again a very nice place that I would recommend considering as an option.

Hope there are Major Improvements

My loved one loved the food, and activities. Most of the time, they only cleaned once per week. They are not washing my loved ones hair or clothes, as often as I would like. There was an issue with the medication, and the pharmacy was very expensive to refill prescriptions. There was a major staff change, and no one seemed to know what they were supposed to be doing. The staff was really nice. It's a beautiful place.

I really didn’t want my loved one to go to Independence Court of Monroeville. The tour wasn’t as extensive as other places we visited. And the place needed updating.

It was a learning process for us. Had to pick out a facility without seeing it in person because of covid. Aids and nurses work very hard. They were short staffed. All in all not a bad place for the price. Just visit your loved ones often.

I would recommend

All of the staff members have been great and the care they provide is great as well. We did have have to recently call hospice in so there is some confusion between what hospice should be doing and what the aids should be doing. So there could just be a little more clarification for the aids. The menu looks great, but our loved one is on a pureed diet. The barriers have been lifted so the activities are coming back, and the volunteers are coming back. There is arts and crafts in the memory care, and our loved one especially likes it when they bake cupcakes because they get to decorate and eat them.
