The friendliness of the CNA's is a 5, but a 1 for management. Initially was really good then was worst experience. She was not given her meds every day. Trash in her room a lot. Got told we had to move her out because she fell too much and they cannot care for people that are fall risks. Will not use alarms and wanted us to pay the [fee removed] a month plus pay for an outside person to be with them 24/7 to watch if they fall. Not helpful with facilitating for her care and for the money we paid would never send another loved one to that facility. The daily care people the CNAs and aids were good but management is horrible and will not help families.

Megan, we are saddened to read this review. During your loved one’s short stay at MorningStar our team worked closely with your family through various challenges related to her changing health needs. On a public forum like this we cannot speak to the particulars, but believe we demonstrated a sincere commitment to serve, suggesting different ideas to support integrated care. We apologize that we could not reach an acceptable resolution. Wishing your family the best!

Not great if I could give a 0 I would
Not a good experience. Was good at first and the intake but we are no longer there. They don’t have ability to help seniors if they are fall risks. If they are prone to falls be prepared that on top of the almost [removed] per month they want to require you to provide 24 hour one on one fall watch care at their facility and pay for that through a outside company and still pay their monthly rate. They will not use bed or chair alarms. When we moved her out they gave us her meds and multiple days were not given to her. [name removed] was great but the others that facilitate the care were very difficult to work with. Dirty dishes in her room a lot and her room would be a mess most of the time. Their experience in this field was misleading by the lead nurse and facility director.

As much as I like them and the facility I would say.... If they r taking care of the meds, make sure to always watch and check the statements; my parents bathroom was not cleaned nearly good enough; keep in mind to "order" a person to help feed/hydrate them; be as present as possible so the workers know that your loved one(s) will not get overlooked and that if that does happen, it is addressed and chances will be lessened to happen again; and with any place you decide on, always keep as close of an eye on your loved one(s) as possible. With any issue that I had, I went directly to the head of the floor. I made myself known with the staff and had a very good relationship with the head of the memory care floor. That way she always knew who I was calling about when I called. Even with what I wrote above, I am glad that Morningstar Wheat Ridge is the facility we picked for my parents last 9ish months of their lives. I forgot to expand on the "ordering" a person to help loved one feed/hydrate.....if your loves one(s) are not able to feed themselves well enough or can't feed themselves, the facility can arrange for a person to be with your person to help feed and hydrate them. This is at an extra cost if your person is not in Hospice.

They knew all the family names. They worked with Hospice team and medical teams very closely. Very coordinated service. They often consulted with family face to face. Only issue was a lag time to make any medication changes. But that was on the safe side.

The care staff is amazing. I have seen meals that I would not feed a dog. Activities are almost non-existent, there is no thought or effort put into the activities. Watching YouTube is considered an activity. Instead of seeing what the residents are interested in, they just keep doing the same old things that take no effort. They keep raising the price and provide sub par food and activities. I have expressed my concerns several times and nothing changes, we are to the point where we will look into something else, my mom loves her care staff, but the rest is terrible.

Dear Valued Family, we are distressed by your review.  In recent weeks our Executive Director and department leaders have met collectively about our families and residents to build an action plan that audits and addresses each matter you have aired.  We are confident in our ability as a team to resolve and rebuild a relationship with any family member who may express this concern.  Thank you for giving us that opportunity. It is our honor to be of service.

Tour experience
We toured with MorningStar of Wheat Ridge and it was fantastic, actually our first choice. But because it was the most expensive of all the places we saw, and, most importantly, my in/laws thought it was too far away, we did not choose it. Our Tour Experience
At that time, a lot of tours were virtual, including our tour at MorningStar. At the same time, another place we ended up choosing allowed in-person tours. Even through a virtual tour, I could see that MorningStar was an older facility and not as nice. The people leading the tour seemed like typical salespeople, like real estate agents that didn’t want to sell real estate anymore, using all the language that just made you feel like they’re trying to sell you something.
Response from MorningStar of Wheat Ridge

We regret reading this assessment from your virtual tour of our Wheat Ridge community. Please accept our apologies for the impression we left. The heart of the MorningStar brand is to be sincerely relational and a true resource for seniors, whatever the circumstances. Throughout the pandemic, we diligently followed COVID guidelines set by healthcare authorities. However, we are now freely permitted to offer in-person tours…and are exceedingly glad, for only then can families see and feel the warmth under our roof. MorningStar of Wheat Ridge was opened in 2016; its interior design wins much praise; view its photo gallery at morningstarseniorliving.com.

Never place your loved one in The Memory Care Center
Do NOT send your loved ones here! This place looks great from the outside, and with the amount of money they charge for a room here you would expect nothing but the best. This place is horrible! The carelessness which they treat their residence’s is so sad. The staff is poorly trained, and incapable of fulfilling the duties that come with taking care of elderly people. When you bring up a concern to the management, they treat you like crap. Many times I have told them that they are understaffed and they pretty much called me a liar. The most recent kick is that they ran out of food! The facility is shared with Assistant Living and they get served first. The chef blamed the kitchen staff for not watching portion control. They have monthly meetings for the family to address concerns and it turns into a shouting match—nothing ever changes. I can't stress enough how horrible our family's experience has beenwith this place. If you want a safe, caring place please look elsewhere.

Allow us first, to apologize, and next, to own some of these missteps. We fully acknowledge and are fully addressing our levels of staffing. The current strength of our economy has created a tight labor market, with unemployment in Denver under 2%. Consequently, we are redoubling our recruiting efforts as we adjust wages to remain competitive for qualified team members with demonstrable skills and compassion. Our training is more robust than ever: 8 hours of general orientation, 6 hours on culture and 8 hours in dementia care. We are also challenging managers with higher measurements of their servant-leadership. We are pleased to report that our culinary team, newly installed, is consistently receiving compliments from diners. This cohesive team, led by Executive Chef Drake, have inventory and logistics well in hand. To your comments on rates, we can attest that we are competitively priced, both in rent and care, when viewed alongside other luxury communities. However, we are assertively finding enhancements across all lines of service, asking families for an extension of grace as we do so. At monthly Family Councils we offer evidence of our gains. This level of candor is difficult to receive, but welcome, knowing it spurs us to improve and protect our brand standards. We would appreciate the opportunity to speak to you in person whenever and upon whatever topic you have concerns.

Poor Management
My Dad was in the memory care ward a little over a year before he passed. One would think with the monthly rent they charge, care would rank accordingly. WRONG. In one year, 3 directors and a high rate of turnovers for caregivers and other staff. The good ones were overworked and underpaid which left the residents in the care of those who really didn't give a damn. Little attention to vanity and cleanliness of the rooms, clothes and linens. Also, poor tracking of residents as far as showers and meals. Overall terrible experience and had it not been for the fact that it would have created more confusion for my father than he already had, I would have moved him from there in a heartbeat. Beautiful facility from the outside into the lobby though.

Response from MorningStar of Wheat Ridge
September 1, 2017
We are saddened that your experience with us was so disappointing. Though being in a very challenged market, in terms of supply and demand for qualified staff, MorningStar goes the extra mile to ensure we are selecting those with caring hearts and a sincere calling to serve seniors sensitively. In our inaugural year, despite the added expense, we increased agency use so as to decrease overtime for our own staff, protecting them from burn-out. We acknowledge having work ethic challenges from these agency supplements, which is the central reason we worked diligently to reach 100% MorningStar staffing and better retention. MorningStar believes in compensating its team members for their hard work. We currently pay within the top 25% of industry standards, and focus a great deal of our efforts on fostering a loving, kind and respectful culture in which to work and thrive. We seek out new and creative ways to show our team how much we value them. And while we are imperfect, we set high standards to provide an extremely safe and sanitary environment for our residents to enjoy. We have systems of accountability and tracking which ensure these standards are met. It is not merely the housekeeping or maintenance department's responsibility, but that of all team members to provide uncompromising levels of cleanliness in our communities.

Tips for evaluating your community options

Safety is a primary concern when seniors and their families look for Assisted Living. To ensure that a community meets your needs and expectations, we recommend that seniors and family members:

  • Tour the location: Touring allows you to speak to current residents and staff, and helps you confirm the accuracy of the community description and photos. Use our touring checklist to help guide your visit.

  • Confirm the availability of required services: Before you commit, make sure that the community offers all the services your senior needs, and that those services can be provided within your budget.

  • Know the Colorado regulations for Assisted Living: Each state has its own laws and inspections processes to ensure seniors reside in a safe environment. Depending on your state, you may even be able to look up inspection reports for the community(ies) you’re considering. Learn more about Colorado regulations for Assisted Living.

A Place for Mom has scored MorningStar of Wheat Ridge 8 out of 10 using our proprietary review score.

We assign review scores to give a more reliable view into senior living communities and home care agencies. Our review scores prioritize reviews that are recent — the past 24 months — because we know families need current information when choosing senior care.

Those with many recent, positive reviews receive a high review score, while providers with few recent reviews — regardless of how positive — receive a lower review score. Communities with no recent reviews will not have a review score, even if older reviews are positive. The maximum A Place for Mom review score a community can receive is 10 points.
