Hemsley House at University Park experience

Hemsley House was great, 5 stars. Sadly Mom passed away [date removed]. She had exceptional care while she was there. I highly recommend Hemsley House. Mom had someone sitting with her when she passed and I was called immediately at that time. They had put her under hospice care after consulting me. They were extremely good at keeping me informed of mom's condition! They came and moved her to a wheelchair to bring her to meals and arranged for her to sit with political like minded people! They go above and beyond to make residents feel comfortable!

Has room for improvement

Everyone was nice, he was in the group room whenever I got there. Always was dressed, even though he never Changed out of his regular cloth at night. Was bathed every 3 days n changed his clothes when needed. Food was good, because I got to eat with him a couple of times. Place was always clean, but had to make them aware that his clothes needed to be washed, but they did loose sheet sets when they got washed. Never did all of the bedding back even though I had his name on everything. He couldn't join activities, with his dementia, could not read or write. Could watch TV on group room. we are still trying to get bookkeeping to write me a check for the time we got credit for month days he didn't use room.

Overall would recommend

I was familiar with the facility and some of the staff. My wife's mother was there for several years before her passing several years ago. The difference between then and now is staff turnover. Since the pandemic, like most other places, turnover is a big problem. So many times my father connected with someone, they would be gone shortly after.

A nice facility with a friendly, respectful staff invested in caring for their clients and accommodating their needs.

I'm rating on my experience while there, however my brother is the client. Yes we would recommend the community to other families. They've been very accommodating to me. Received feedback well. Try to be responsive and my brother is well settled in. I'm going to hate to move him once the money runs out because he seems the happiest he's been in a long while.

Not recommended

We went into the facility under the assisted living. Room and board were great. Housekeeping staff was awesome and food was excellent. There were concerns on treatment levels. I felt she had the same level of care despite the increase in her plan and costs. Communication regarding her care was minimal. She also transitioned from assisted living to memory care and I feel the transition was handled very poorly. Then when in memory care, they did not have the staff to adequately care for patients. At times there was one staff member for 12 patients for a full shift. Upper management was very poor. Most of the caregivers were very good, but often short staffed. I ultimately moved my mom to a new facility. The initial move in process was smooth, but I also felt they told me they could accommodate certain things and then couldn't after we moved in. Even some of the staff members told me they would not put their own moms there. Also, some areas of the facility were run down... outdoor furniture was rotting in sun... couldn't sit without splinters. Back patio was utilized more by staff than residents. Memory care patio was a mess. Landscaping was over run. I would not recommend this facility to others.

not a great experience, disappointed, look elsewhere

Medical care sub-pare. Food typical for facility. Hall carpets soiled. I would recommend only if you only needed room and board. Anything else, NO.

Review for Sunrise of University Park

The Assisted living section might be better but I would not recommend the Memory Unit. Not unless they make changes. The right hand doesn't know what the left hand is doing.I took my husband out of that facility after one month. There were too many incidents occurring and I could no longer leave him there. I found a new facility, and my husband has not fallen once.

Sunrise at University Park, as good as it gets

My loved one is currently a resident at Sunrise of University Park and everything has been great for her at this facility! Communication with the family is excellent. The staff is great. The activities are great. The food is good. The care is good. We are really happy with Sunrise at University Park. I would absolutely recommend this facility to family and friends.

Peace of mind

I am happy that Sunrise of University Park is a very secure facility. In most areas they do quite well, but I have heard so many complaints about the food. I think they need more variety when it comes to the food menu. I would recommend Sunrise University Park to others looking. I am very thankful that my mother-in-law is safe now.

Would Recommend

Small size community made it more welcoming and easier to navigate. Facility was very clean. Other residents seemed happy. Staff was so friendly and welcoming. So many little details that I didn't think to ask about that we had to learn as we went such as laundry, night care, how to approach things with dementia. I think all assisted living is ridiculously high cost. But would recommend Sunrise of University Park to others.

Definitely would recommend

I would tell others that they try very hard to accommodate the desires and habits and personalized care that your loved one may need. I think they are great about giving feedback so that you can feel like your family member is being well cared for and that they actually pay attention to detail and try to customize the care. I like that the facility is smaller and has a better staff-to-resident ratio. I would definitely recommend Sunrise of University Park.

Be Aware

They need to improve on cleaning my loved ones room, daily care, and communication. Also, management is not as receptive. It's fine for people who are more active, mobile, and can do things on their own. If your loved one needs, a higher level care, then look into another community.

We toured this community and were not impressed. It felt more like working with a used car salesman. The person we worked with was very focused on talking numbers and getting us to sign. He didn't ask a single question about care needs or anything about our loved one's. The residents didn't seem very happy. The facility itself wasn't bad.

Highly recommend

What I liked best about Sunrise was the staff, nurses & Dr. were very communicative with me about my father's situation & health. Placing a family member in a facility is difficult, but communication about how they are doing is hugely important & helpful.

Happy with our choice

My mother in laws friend who lived across the street moved here and she knew more people as well so she wanted to tour. When we came to visit she really liked the room and the overall atmosphere of the facility. She loves the activities. They play bingo, make jewelry, chair yoga, movie night, etc. [name removed] who was formerly the front desk girl is the activities director knows all of the residents by name and she keeps you informed on what is going on. She also does the daily paper with trivia, crosswords puzzles, and fun things like that. She is a great asset to the facility. I would recommend to others looking.

The Sunrise community is an outstanding location for any individual that can afford it. It is not at the top end of the cost window for assisted living communities in Colorado Springs but it is beyond mom's funds even if she receives a full VA spousal benefit in addition to her Social Security. The facility is modern and well maintained. It is on a major thoroughfare. The grounds are fenced however, the entrance to the parking is open and the building in open access during the day.
