Best option in a community with few choices for memory care

My husband died 10 months ago so my opinions could be dated. The facility has some great staff and a wonderful activities director but they had chronic staffing shortage and turnover issues. The activities director was way overworked . Not really their fault. The building itself is kind of old style. The only reason I chose this facility is that it was three minutes from my house and at the time was by far the best option within an hour's drive. Durango is a pretty small community. More and better memory care is desperately needed but I don't know how that will happen given the staffing difficulties.

Taking Great care of Mom

So, We lost Dad in October, 2024. My Mother has a great mind but has mobility issues with the threat of falling and can no longer live alone. On Feb 1, we moved Mom into Sunshine Gardens Senior Living facility. My family could not be happier with the care and compassion this facility's staff has shown in the time we have been there. They constantly respond to Moms needs and even take her meals to her when she's not up to go to the cafeteria. The apartments are really nice and clean and set up perfectly for Senior living. We come and go when it's good for us and my Mother says the home cooked food is DELICIOUS! It's an affordable and safe option for your loved ones and I highly recommend this facility. Hats off the the Managers, [names removed].

Wonderful caring staff, but not enough of them

I placed my loved one here when his Alzheimer’s had progressed to the point that I could no longer safely care for him at home.He lived in the memory care unit for six months until his death. The proximity of the facility to my home far outweighed my concerns regarding the level of staffing and care. The caregivers and the staff were caring and kind, and truly care about the residents. Unfortunately, this is a small town in a remote area and it is hard to retain good staff. The facility simply doesn’t have enough people. Sometimes I felt that the caregivers were overwhelmed. The activity director is amazing, but she needs an assistant. It would be great if someone with a medical background were on staff as well. These are just my observations. If, heaven forbid, I had to do this all over again, I would still have placed my husband here.

Review for Sunshine Gardens

A lot of the staff was friendly, but I felt at times my mom was brushed off on being checked on. They were also a huge hassle to get our refund back after my mom had passed. We went through months of being ignored and having to constantly email or call to see if our check was on the way. But they're real quick to get their payment at the beginning of the month. Activities or entertainment in memory care could be better. More music and outdoor time would be great. The meals were small and sometimes not appealing. Even with all of this said I would still recommend Sunshine Gardens because it's way better care than any other facility in the area.

Genuinely Caring Staff

The caregivers genuinely care about the residents. I don't ever have to worry about my mom being taken care of. They're also very good about updating about any concerns.

Taking Care of Mom

Their staff cares for my loved one and tried to engage her. Overall they are a bit understaffed but they have some really great people there.
