Over the holidays I was able to visit my grandma at The Heartlands for the first time. Upon my arrival, I was pleased to see such a beautiful building and facilities, along with her cozy room. The staff seemed very warm and caring too, which made me feel confident that my grandma was being well taken care of. As I expressed to my grandma that the place seemed very nice she immediately told me that the food is absolutely terrible. She informed me that her meals are always cold and sometimes she's not even sure of what she is eating. This absolutely broke my heart. I also heard the same food grievances from other residents and resident's family members. One family member of a resident told me that a bread stick was so hard it didn't even break when they hit it on the table! These residents deserve much better, the food should be pleasurable and palatable at the very least! I sincerely hope changes will be made in order to provide warm and enjoyable meals to these very deserving people!

For the amount of money a resident pays for the stay, a person would expect the food to be better. I've ate here twice and both times a special occasion Thanksgiving and Christmas. Both times the food was so terrible it could not be finished. Trust me it wasn't the size of the portion. That's another thing. The size of the portion is ridiculous. [fee removed] per plate. This is an absolute disgrace. I hope the board members will become residents soon only to find what a disappointing waste of hard earned money.

We visited my grandma and stayed to eat with her on Christmas. We were extremely disappointed to discover that the food served was both undercooked and served cold, not warm. We've heard this complaint from other family members and can confirm that this department needs improvement. When she first arrived from a facility in Cass City, this was not the case. Maybe there has been a change in services that we aren't aware of. Regardless, we are hopeful that a change/improvement can be expected soon. With the [fee removed] increase starting in 2025, this should be attainable.

My Mother is a Resident here at Heartlands. I just ate the Christmas meal, everything was good but the food was lukewarm too cold. My Mom came last summer and I have notice that the food is always lukewarm. Is there a way that the kitchen can improve in this area. With the price that the Residents pay per month please work on this.

The Heartlands is a great addition to our area. The staff was more than welcoming when we arrived for our tour and they even had fresh muffins waiting for us! They were doing chair yoga when we walked through and every resident we saw had a smile on their face. The apartments give you a home-like feeling and an opportunity to make the space truly your own.

The Heartlands is a gorgeous community! The Independent Living Villas are so spacious and accessible. It's great that the main building is close and offers amenties to the residents (fitness center, daily activities, and AMAZING food). The Assisted Living building is also just beautiful! Beyond that, the staff is more then we could have ever asked for. From Culinary, to Care Staff, to the Admin Team, they are seriously fantastic and treat our loved ones like they are family of their own. The staff goes above and beyond for all of the residents and that is why we love The Heartlands!!

Safety is a primary concern when seniors and their families look for Assisted Living. To ensure that a community meets your needs and expectations, we recommend that seniors and family members:
Tour the location: Touring allows you to speak to current residents and staff, and helps you confirm the accuracy of the community description and photos. Use our touring checklist to help guide your visit.
Confirm the availability of required services: Before you commit, make sure that the community offers all the services your senior needs, and that those services can be provided within your budget.
Know the Michigan regulations for Assisted Living: Each state has its own laws and inspections processes to ensure seniors reside in a safe environment. Depending on your state, you may even be able to look up inspection reports for the community(ies) you’re considering. Learn more about Michigan regulations for Assisted Living.

A Place for Mom has scored The Heartlands 8.5 out of 10 using our proprietary review score.
We assign review scores to give a more reliable view into senior living communities and home care agencies. Our review scores prioritize reviews that are recent — the past 24 months — because we know families need current information when choosing senior care.
Those with many recent, positive reviews receive a high review score, while providers with few recent reviews — regardless of how positive — receive a lower review score. Communities with no recent reviews will not have a review score, even if older reviews are positive. The maximum A Place for Mom review score a community can receive is 10 points.
