If you or a loved one is looking to retire on the West Coast, you can’t go wrong with Long Beach, California. Long Beach may be known for its sunny beaches and bustling port, but what many people don’t know is that the area started off as a ranching community. That history is kept alive by one of the city’s highlight attractions: Rancho Los Cerritos. Besides its rich history, the city also boasts a thriving arts scene.
As one might expect, independent living communities in the city offer seniors the opportunity to maintain their independence in age-friendly environments. A Place for Mom partners with 10 communities within a 10-mile radius of the city center. Not only do these partners provide seniors with opportunities to socialize, but they also boast several amenities. On-site fitness centers, libraries, beauty salons, and even swimming pools are just a few of the perks you’ll find.
Are you considering moving to an independent living community? We know how big of a decision that can be. To help, we put together this guide on Long Beach’s independent living communities. Here, you’ll find information on costs, potential payment options, local and state regulations, transportation methods, health care facilities, and more.

We developed a proprietary recommendation system that orders Long Beach community options based on factors we know are important to seniors and their families:
We collect proprietary data from our network of 14,000+ senior living communities in the U.S., with regular refreshes of data and information
We have 387,000+ reviews from senior living residents and family members that provide first-hand accounts about senior living communities
The average cost of an independent living community in Long Beach is $4,619 per month, according to A Place for Mom’s proprietary data.[01] This figure, which includes the price of rent as well as any associated or add-on fees, represents the average cost of one of our partner facilities.
The following chart represents the average baseline costs for the immediate area and does not include additional fees.
Most seniors rely on private revenue streams to pay for independent living because these communities aren’t considered continuing care facilities. However, there are other methods available that can cover some expenses. Below, you’ll find additional information on private payment methods, VA benefits, Medicaid, and Medicare.
You can use a combination of private revenue streams to pay for independent living. This includes retirement savings, Social Security benefits, pensions, retirement account distributions, investment-generated income, and any of the following:
Number of veterans who live in Long Beach
About 49% of Long Beach veterans are over the age of 65
To honor those who served, the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs offers various benefits to veterans. Seniors can use these benefits to cover independent living community costs. VA Pensions, for instance, were established to supplement the income of eligible veterans. The funds can be used for a variety of purposes. There’s also the Aid and Attendance benefit, which can be put toward care-related costs. Check out the official government website to apply, or visit the Los Angeles Regional VA Office.
Additionally, California veterans may be eligible for a property tax exemption. If you own limited property totaling no more than $5,000 if single or $10,000 if married, California provides a property exemption of up to $4,000. Veterans with a service-related ailment may also be eligible for the Disabled Veterans’ Exemption, which provides an exemption of $100,000 (or $150,000 for low-income individuals).
Enrolling for any one of these benefits can be complicated, but assistance is available. Veterans services organizations (VSOs) can help you or your loved one understand eligibility requirements, file claims, and more. Long Beach has an American Legion and a Paralyzed Veterans of America. There are also two other support organizations: the Long Beach Library Veterans Resource Center and the Long Beach Office of Veterans Support.

Medi-Cal, California’s Medicaid program, does not cover the monthly costs associated with an independent living community. It can, however, help offset the costs of any medically necessary in-home care services through one of its waiver programs. Most likely, you’ll need to use the general Medi-Cal Waiver Program or the Home and Community-Based Alternatives Waiver.
If you haven’t yet enrolled for Medi-Cal, California makes it fairly easy. Before applying, check out Medi-Cal’s eligibility requirements on the California Department of Health Care Services and review the handy My Medi-Cal guide to compare programs. Once you’re done, here’s how you can apply:
Should you run into problems with the application process or have any questions, a Covered California certified enrollment counselor can offer support. The Los Angeles County Aging & Disabilities Department and your local ombudsman program, Wise & Healthy Aging, can also answer your questions about Medi-Cal or help with the application process.

Medicare does not cover the monthly costs of an independent living community. However, it does help offset costs associated with medically necessary health care services, such as short-term in-home care or inpatient hospital stays.
Medicare offers a range of programs that can be of great assistance to qualifying seniors who reside in a Long Beach independent living community. These programs include:
If you have questions about Medicare or are uncertain about the application process, help is available. The California Department of Aging, the Los Angeles County Aging & Disabilities Department, and the City of Los Angeles Department of Aging support seniors navigating insurance. Additionally, the Wise & Healthy Aging ombudsman helps seniors advocate for their health care rights.

Unlike other senior living options, independent living communities are considered general housing, just with stipulations associated with age. As such, property owners must comply with standard rental property regulations, the Fair Housing Act, and the Americans with Disabilities Act. Residents who are part of protected classes cannot be discriminated against, offered less favorable terms and conditions, or denied reasonable accommodations or modifications. The Housing Authority of the City of Long Beach takes responsibility for creating equal opportunities.
Interestingly, some independent living communities offer combination care. This means they’re also assisted living and/or memory care communities. In these cases, the facilities must obtain licenses through the California Senior Care Licensing Program. The properties would also be subject to regular inspections by an Adult and Senior Care Regional Office. Inspectors screen applicants, conduct background checks, ensure fire clearance is up to code, and much more. To review past inspection reports, you can search specific facilities online or call 916-558-1784.
When an independent living community provides other services, such as assisted living or memory care, the property must follow additional regulations. Assisted living must offer assistance with daily activities (e.g., dressing, grooming, personal hygiene, etc.) and employ sufficient staff. If offering memory care, the property must be regulated by the Community Care Licensing Division of the California Department of Social Services.

Long Beach has issued COVID-19 health orders to control the spread of the virus. They are aligned with city, county, and state guidelines in addition to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines. However, some independent living communities may have their own regulations. Contact the community in question for more information.
Vaccinations and boosters are strongly encouraged but not required.
People should wear masks when in public. They should also mask if they are presenting symptoms, have tested positive, or have been exposed to someone with COVID-19.
Communities should follow enhanced cleaning and disinfecting protocols.
People should isolate themselves if they test positive for COVID-19.

The majority of properties have a library, TV lounge, and beauty salon.[01] Depending on your choice of community, you can also meet up with friends and family in a game room, schedule a quick trim at a barber shop, experiment in an arts and crafts center, or exercise at a fitness center. One community even has a swimming pool, which can come in handy during the summer months.

Walk Score ranks Long Beach 73 out of 100 for walkability, so you can get to most places on foot.[07] But although it has been voted one of the “most walkable” cities in America, Long Beach is still relatively large. The city consists of eight distinct neighborhoods. In other words, there’s no shortage of places to explore.
Long Beach has a bike score of 70, so active seniors can hit one of the city’s many bike trails. However, there are other ways to get around, such as the Metro Blue Line. The area’s light rail system can take you from downtown Long Beach to Artesia Station, with a number of stops in between.
While most independent living communities are conveniently located near public transit, 90% of our partner communities offer complimentary transportation.[01] You also can arrange at-cost transportation at half our partner independent living communities in the area.
Long Beach Transit also has a number of routes with special rates for seniors, and Dial-A-Lift provides curb-to-curb services for individuals who are unable to use the bus system. If you can no longer use a fixed route transit system, the Public Works of Los Angeles County can also get you around. Call 800-827-0829 for more information.
With Hollywood to the north and Anaheim to the east, Long Beach doesn’t often get the love it deserves. However, this can be quite a boon for seniors living in the area. You won’t need to contend with the crowds often found in neighboring cities as you explore the city’s activities and attractions.
Looking for something to do? Try visiting Shoreline Village for the shops, restaurants, boat rentals, and architecture. The area was modeled after a Cape Cod fishing village. You can also check out nearby Rainbow Harbor, where you can charter a boat, take a harbor cruise, or do a little whale watching.
On the other side of Shoreline Village, you’ll find the Aquarium of the Pacific. Part of Shoreline Aquatic Park, this public aquarium features more than 11,000 animals on around five acres of land. The aquarium offers indoor and outdoor exhibits, shark tanks, a sea otter habitat, and even a coral reef. Seniors can expect to pay $33.95 for tickets.
If you’re looking for something a bit more active, El Dorado East Regional Park should definitely be at the top of your to-do list. Like any park, you’ll find plenty of green space and picnic areas to enjoy, but there’s also an archery range, two fishing lakes, bike trails, and a physical fitness course. The park also features a nature center with walking trails, educational displays, an art gallery, and more. There is a per-visit vehicle fee unless you have a discounted annual parking pass.
Those who want to learn a bit more about Southern California and the Long Beach area may want to check out Rancho Los Cerritos. Many of the historic homes and gardens are wheelchair accessible. You can tour this historic adobe home for free.

Seniors can purchase discounted tickets for $10 and check out manual wheelchairs for free.
If you’d rather get to know other seniors in the area, there are a few local senior centers.
