The Barclay at Charlottesville
We have been at The Barlcay, formally Anthology, for 2.5 years. Everything since the changeover has been better than under the previous manager (Anthology). The staff is more attentive and friendlier and the communication has been better. The only way to get the full value of the facility would be to use everything they offer, ie. pool, billiards room, movie theatre, exercise room, etc. Considering the age and physical limitations of most of the residents, many of these things seem unneccessary. It is also hard to consider anything an excellent value for the cost, even though the monthly charge seems in line with other facilities in the area. The dining hall food is very average and the selection does not vary, but the Bistro that operates from 10-2 is excellent.

Never refunded after Mom’s death
The facility is gorgeous but this place is grossly mismanaged. There isn’t a single person on staff that cares about getting a timely response to you. I have been waiting for almost a year for a rent refund following my mother’s death. Mediocrity would be giving the team the benefit of the doubt.

Bad management bringing down the experience of its resident seniors
All the good staff quit. The facility is new and nice. But management is pathetic, so that flows downhill and employee satisfaction and retention remains difficult. I would not recommend Anthology of Charlottesville.

Everyone is capable and talented. But weekend staffing challenges often impact the resident experience. I would recommend the facility - with the recommendation that the potential resident have an offsite family member/sponsor consistently helping to oversee care.

Overall Good Experience
Very nice facility. Clean, well kept. Lots of amenities. Family involvement in memory care is phenomenal. Hands on staff, overall, is very dedicated and hardworking and loving. Chronically understaffed (like everywhere) but it's getting better. Upper management isn't great so they lose a lot of good staff.

Review for Anthology of Charlottesville
I think it's a reasonable place to consider. There are probably other places that are more established with good reputations but are hard to get into or cost more. The building is only a couple years old so it's bright, modern, lots of sitting areas. There is a large courtyard if you want to sit outside. Care has gotten better and new nursing director is good. Facility is clean but room cleaning could be better. As with any assisted living you need someone to advocate for the resident. Food is barely mediocre and menu does not change much. Dining room moves incredibly slow and staff not very attentive. Activities are very female oriented. They bring in entertainment and have a happy hour Monday-Friday. Other residents are mostly pleasant. They allow pets and a cat is great company for my husband. Overall I am satisfied.

Well Appointed & Staffed with a Warm Hug Feel
It is modern and feels much like a hotel walking in and not an "old folks place". It is very clean and well organized. [name removed], our Sales person, was very passionate and engaged with us from the beginning. Her follow up was by far the best! People smile and I spent enough time there to watch the care attendants with people - they were kind and caring and respectful. The food is in transition, I believe and definitely needs some work. It is the main complaint my parents have

Review for Anthology of Charlottesville
What got us was that it offered everything they wanted in one shiny new place. Unfortunately, the place is falling apart. But, still, it looked nice on the tour. Food and staffing, I suppose, were the two biggest issues. But there were lots of major issues, including billing errors and care lapses. It's was a costly error in more ways than simply money.

Quality care
My father lived at Anthology for the past year until his recent passing. I want to thank the staff for the excellent care he was given and the kindness shown to him and our family. We knew we had chosen the right place when he said it felt almost like home and he liked his nurse.

Poor Management
The general area was clean, but we had to sometimes clean my loved ones room. Some of the people were responsive, and some were not. Sometimes the food was cold, and always late. It was overpriced for what we got. They had trouble finding people to run the place, and were always understaffed.

Thriving
It was new, lovely and bright with nice and differing common areas. They have a pool, decent activities, sales person was engaging, staff friendly, lots of people milling around, bistro for coffee, snacks, beverages and sandwiches. Beautiful courtyard and catholic service with communion weekly.PT and OT are very good, staff is very nice but they are understaffed as are all places and it can take awhile for someone to answer call bell. Facility is clean and well maintained but room cleaning is spotty. Residents are generally engaging. My husband is very happy there. Food leaves a bit to be desired but nice that dining is open all day and there is a menu you can always order from along with daily specials. Activities tend to be more female oriented, again all facilities have this issue.

Disappointed
Parents moved in high expectations. After 2 weeks they moved out. Many of the things that were part of the services were not done. Maintenance of the building poor, no one ever came in to clean their apartment, pool broken more times than working, golf simulator never worked. [name removed] has been promised since the place opened. The meal we were served as potential residents was nothing like the meals they got once the moved in. Some of the staff are very nice and tried, but it was not their responsibility. When we talked with folks there before moving in, they all said it was great. The people we spoke with turned out to be memory care residence. Very disappointed. Very costly. The director never returned calls or emails when we tried to get things resolved.

My review of Anthology of Charlottesville
Here's an improvement suggestion- they really turned me off at the start because each time I paid them a visit (3 times) there was a NEW Marketing resource and potentially new Executive Director. I went into a closure with them knowing they had visible 'back office' & exec staffing issues. I expected to see the same at the care level. That's why it was essential that I be close by. I expected to be filling in a lot. However, my loved one has to continue to live here and she loves it.

Tips for evaluating your community options

Safety is a primary concern when seniors and their families look for Assisted Living. To ensure that a community meets your needs and expectations, we recommend that seniors and family members:

  • Tour the location: Touring allows you to speak to current residents and staff, and helps you confirm the accuracy of the community description and photos. Use our touring checklist to help guide your visit.

  • Confirm the availability of required services: Before you commit, make sure that the community offers all the services your senior needs, and that those services can be provided within your budget.

  • Know the Virginia regulations for Assisted Living: Each state has its own laws and inspections processes to ensure seniors reside in a safe environment. Depending on your state, you may even be able to look up inspection reports for the community(ies) you’re considering. Learn more about Virginia regulations for Assisted Living.
