Sunridge at Desert Springs is a beautiful assisted living facility with a beautiful, green courtyard. I know that memory care residents are benefited by being housed with assisted living residents, but I think my mother would become depressed thinking that would be her future state and would rapidly go downhill. I will not be placing my mother there. Sorry.

[Name removed] and her staff are great! My mother is early onset Alzheimer’s and so she doesn’t think she should be there. The staff helped to make her feel like she was there to help others and now she is coming out of her apartment, ore often and engaging with others. Her meds are administered on time and staff call me with concerns. I highly recommend Desert Springs as it is a smaller community and very caring environment.

A wonderful choice for my Mom
My Mother has lived at Sun Ridge at Desert Springs for 8 years. She has been very well cared for and treated like a beloved family member. It is a homelike environment that is clean, bright and nicely furnished. The employees/caregivers treat the residents like family and I appreciate the fact that they always let me know the slightest change in my Mother's condition. I know I can drop by any time and my Mom will be in clean clothing and ready for company. It makes me feel good knowing that Mom is well taken care of when I can't be with her and she is happy and she has always genuinely seemed to genuinely liked the staff. If I ever have a concern or issue I know I can go to the director and have questions answered and problems solved right away. That gives me peace of mind and the knowledge that Mom is safe and comfortable.

My Mom is happy and loves the staff
My mother has lived at Sun Ridge at Desert Springs for many years. I love the home atmosphere and the staff which takes great care of my Mom. They treat her like she is their Mom. I appreciate that. She is always clean and well fed and if there is any problem I am notified right away. It is important to me that she have really exceptional care all the time because I work. I do get by to see her almost every day but I know that if I can't get by to see her she is well cared for. If there is a problem I appreciate the fact that I can call and talk to [name removed] [name removed] the director or [name removed] who is in charge of the med techs and staff and I know it will be resolved right away. That is important to me. I feel secure with Mom there knowing that she is well cared for and loved even if I can't be with her every minute of the day. My Mom is now not so involved in activities so I cannot really judge activities. I know the activities director there is very innovative and fun and works hard to keep everyone entertained and occupied. I like the fact that I see people sitting in small groups talking at dinner when I visit Mom and that resident assistants joke and talk with residents and even call them Grandma if the resident likes that or Mr. or Mrs. and their last name if the resident prefers that. Its that type of personal interest in the residents and caring that makes it a great place for my Mom and the reason she is so comfortable there. My Mom requires more care than most since she has been there a long time so I am not sure what the entry level rate is, my rate is definitely higher.

It's a good place to have your loved one.
I really like the atmosphere of Sunridge at Desert Springs. My husband likes it also. It seems like a big roomy home that is beautifully decorated. All the staff greets the residents and the visitors with a friendly attitude. They are very helpful and answers your questions and concerns.

No accountability, Poor and Inconsistent Care
We removed mom from the care at Desert Springs just at 7 months. This was largely due to very poor management and supervision. Most of the staff were very caring and attentive, however too often my mothers apartment condition was in terrible shape, she was too often left in the same clothes. They didn’t bathe mom regularly, I would shower her. The staff was not trained to handle the varying behaviors of dementia / Alzheimer’s. Too often people who were more capable were left wandering with no supervision. Too many people were bruised from falls. After repeated attempts to work with BAKA management regarding communication, care taking issues, issues with cleanliness we didn’t see improvement. My moms items were continually missing (when we took her out she had no shoes left) only a pair of slippers. Often times the staff would congregate in the dining hall in aware of residents wheareabouts. My moms toilet was overflowed for two days and they turned the water off but didn’t clean up the mess and kept the water off for the weekend. We discovered this on a Sunday and one Tuesday the water was still not on. The current manager [Name removed] was very ineffective at managing staff, executing on changes and follow up. The staff needed better supervision but often times she was gone by 4 pm it was difficult to reach her in premises. The staff took advantage of this because no one was around. There was only one RN, [Name removed] for 6 facilitaties and his idea of solutions was to remove people to send to GBU. He was in over his head. I see a night and day difference with the care my mom is now receiving vs what the experience was at Desert Springs. There simply was no one holding the management and staff accountable for the consistent required care for the residents. They didn’t follow through with recommendations such as sign in sheets when rooms were checked and cleaned, medicine dosing/application etc. accountability was the biggest gap to making improvements.

Not a Quality Memory Care provider
After much research and deliberation, we chose Desert Springs as a safe, living place for mom to continue living with dementia outside her own home. The biggest issue we faced was too much staff turn over, not enough supervision and continuity of care during nights and weekends, absolutely terrible management and leadership from [name removed], the Director. Mom was left in same clothes many times through the week, room not cleaned regularly w/ feces and soiled paper left around, toilet left overflowed for two days. People who were not incapacitated (I.e wheelchair, walker) were left wandering too much. Many items were missing such as shoes, stuffed animals toiletries, snacks. They have one RN for 6 centers and he isn’t available to the other staff to train and supervise in dealing with multiple phases of dementia behavior. One reason we chose this residence is they indicated they were Dementia Memory Care specifically, but it became clear the majority of staff is not versed in handling and redirecting various behaviors. Mostly they tend to people that were more incapacitated, but those that were active were largely unattended. The people who are supposed to be leading and managing are not available and the remaining staff is left without supervision or accountability too much of the time. We worked with corporate BAKA Enterprise but things didn’t improve because there wasn’t follow through with what they said they would do. We had to move mom at just 7 months of staying there. They did not treat mom or others with dignity in a consistent way.

Very nice looking memory care community
We toured this community when we were looking into care options for our loved one. We really liked the look of this place! It is a memory care specific community, and the staff all seemed very knowledgeable and caring. Unfortunately they didn't have any openings when we toured, but they referred us to their sister community Sunridge at Cielo Vista, which we absolutely love!

Needed family there to monitor medication
I was only in that facility once, my dad was kind of put in there on blind faith; it was an emergency and I had to have a place to put im. It was a beautiful facility, eveyone was sitting having lunch together and it was very positive to me. While my dad was there, there was no family visiting and that would have made a big difference, but he was acting out and it was through his behavior there that another community wouldn't take him. When he was here he was on 5 very potent antipsychotic meds and htere were no family there to monitor it. It was a very new experience for me and there was no one there putting their foot down and saying no, it's too much. I really liked the look of it, the one day I was in there it seemed to be a very nice facility with nice treatment, but my dad did not do well there.

Tips for evaluating your community options

Safety is a primary concern when seniors and their families look for Assisted Living. To ensure that a community meets your needs and expectations, we recommend that seniors and family members:

  • Tour the location: Touring allows you to speak to current residents and staff, and helps you confirm the accuracy of the community description and photos. Use our touring checklist to help guide your visit.

  • Confirm the availability of required services: Before you commit, make sure that the community offers all the services your senior needs, and that those services can be provided within your budget.

  • Know the Texas regulations for Assisted Living: Each state has its own laws and inspections processes to ensure seniors reside in a safe environment. Depending on your state, you may even be able to look up inspection reports for the community(ies) you’re considering. Learn more about Texas regulations for Assisted Living.
