About the facility
Walnut Place - AL/MC

Walnut Place welcomes seniors to a modern, homelike ambience north of downtown Dallas, Texas. Since 1980, the community has been provided independent living, assisted living, memory care, skilled nursing, and rehabilitation for people 55+. Have peace of mind knowing a hospital is across the street, with additional medical facilities and other hospitals within 10 miles of the community. Between a shopping mall, botanical garden, and museums, seniors have access to a variety of nearby activities and outings.

Attend medical appointments or stock up on food from the store through the community’s scheduled transportation. Relax in the sun with other residents on the spacious brick courtyard. Beyond the chef-prepared meals served in the formal restaurant-style dining area, some residents have access to the community’s cafe.

Between pet-friendly studio, one-, and two-bedroom apartments, seniors have a choice between which cozy layout best suits them and follows their care needs. The skilled nursing suites are even made to feel more like being at home than just a room with a hospital bed. Feel at ease knowing apartments include an emergency pull cord. With the exception of seniors in independent living, residents have round-the-clock care. Medicaid may be accepted for some care services. At the warm...

Walnut Place

I only have experience with the memory unit. Mostly they leave people to just sit. Sometimes park them in front of the TV. I have seen nurse aids to be sharp and impatient with these very impaired residents. Once I found my brother in law bleeding. When I asked the nurse aid, she said she told the RN about it but nothing was done. I approached the RN who ignored me while she finished a conversation, and then grudgingly agreed to treat the bleeding area. Patient care for those folks is minimal. Don't know how the regular wards are, with higher functioning residents.

Walnut Place - AL/MC

As far as the snacks go, they don't really offer them. My father is kind of inward with dementia and I have to keep bringing things like maybe a diet soda or wants a donut or the cranberry juice is actually like a fruit powder he would like grapes sliced apples, sliced oranges. The activities seem a bit kind of boring. It would be nice if they had movie night with movies from their generation like from the 50s 40s and played music from 50s and 40s. I was up there at one time and they were playing music from the Vietnam war time and that's definitely not entertaining like Frank Sinatra, classical music might be nice. We do enjoy everyone there. The nurse staff is definitely the most helpful we've experienced it's difficult having the other departments like getting us on the Medicaid list helping us with bed replacement that is accurate. My father has a bed that's too small and Nursing . I guess that I am supposed to do that kind of makes sense. it's just how did you get this type of bed in the first place things like that would be the slight negative all in all and we are very happy with Walnut Place. These are experiences for me. There's always a little room for improvement and my father is very happy there so God bless and thank you.

DO NOT DO IT!!!

I would never and I say never put my loved one in this place. The nursing care is unacceptable. It starts from the front office profession to the nursing care. Your loved one will not be cared for, the nurses do not do their jobs, they are bothered if you ask a question or need something, they will point to one another for the other to answer a question. The place smells horribly. There are patients in their wheels chairs roaming the halls because they are not cared for. The food is always cold. The nurses are suppose to check on their patients every two hours, if that is the case, you would never see them at their desk chatting or eating, that’s what they did instead!! I say, do not expose your loved one to this place, period!!!

Our Experience

My loved one is currently a resident at Walnut Place. It's only been two or three months. We're not very happy with the place. They are understaffed and he is not getting the care that we hoped for. He has fallen several times. The nurse aide I talk with says that she is not happy that the others are not watching over him when she is not there. A couple of the nurse aides speak roughly or impatiently to the residents. I understand that the patients in memory care are not easy, but I wish Walnut Place hired for a more caring personality. I should say that the Director of Nursing, [name removed], is very nice and means well but is so overwhelmed by all of the demands on him for monitoring 6 floors that he often forgets what he promised and drops the ball.

Review for Walnut Place - AL/MC

Do the research and find the right fit for your family. Walnut Place has flexibility in services they're able to provide, and the people make the difference. We chose WP because of the flexibility of options that may be needed in the future, and because of affirmations and endorsements from other families we know who have family members living there.

First time

I usually do not write reviews, but I was so impressed with walnut place that I wanted to share my experience. My wife has Alzheimer’s and has trouble keeping her balance. The staff immediately saw that and had her use a walker, which she had refused to use at our house. The nursing staff was first rate. They followed my instructions to the letter in giving her the medication I had provided. The aids were also friendly and accommodating and managed to give my wife several showers during her 6 day stay. My wife told me that whenever I leave to go out of town, that she would like to stay at walnut place. As my wife has Alzheimer’s she stayed in the memory care unit at the facility. In conclusion complements go to the administration staff for holding my hand as I brought my wife to walnut place and to the entire staff on the 5th floor.

Dining Services

Food at walnut place is fantastic from the director of dining to the staff who works in the kitchen. The food is tasty the tacos taste better than a restaurant. The desserts are wonderful and if you don’t want what’s on the menu you can order something like a hotdog, as good as getting it from the state state fair, or a toasted pimento cheese as good as your mom would make. I give dining an A plus A plus.

Respite Stay

I came from California to Texas for a rare surgery and needed a place to stay to heal up until my post op surgery. Walnut Place went over and above my expectations. All staff was courteous. I was well atteneded to making sure my every need was met. The Director of Community Relations, stayed in close contact witih me from our first call until the time I was safe and back at home, I would recommend this home. The middle mark for food was not because the food wasn't good, It was fresh and prepared well. It was just not what I am used to eating.

Community Tour

The manager at Walnut Place was delightful and kind. But the facility was not what we needed. We didn't like that their Memory Care unit was on an upper floor - we really wanted our loved one to have safe access outdoors whenever she needed some fresh air.

Wonderful experience since the day we had an appointment for the initial tour. My mom started in skilled nursing for 2 weeks and is moving to assisted living on the 6th-floor turnaround. I Plan to Live Here Until the End of My Life

I lived in two other facilities prior to moving here. My stay at those other places were short due to improper care! My daughter found Walnut Place. Oh how great Walnut Place is to live in this assisted living. Always a smile and always ready to take care of my needs. [Name removed] and [Name removed] work on the 6th floor. They work many hours when needed to care for us! I am impressed with each of them, maintenance, [name removed] the social director and [name removed]. I place to live here until the end of my time.

Amazing Social Activities

My mom has always been very independent until last year. Unfortunately she now has vascular dementia from a stroke. In just a few days she went from independence to now needing to be looked after. Since she's been here at Walnut Place, because she now engages with others and is on regular schedule. She is so afraid she will miss something. My mom, I never thought I would say this is happy and social! Everyone their makes her feel like she belongs, not that she is stuck behind locked doors or a prison. My sister and I went from always arguing with mom about where she lives happily. relieved Mom is happy! Thank you so much, it helps us to know she's taken care of and loved.

Tips for evaluating your community options

Safety is a primary concern when seniors and their families look for Assisted Living. To ensure that a community meets your needs and expectations, we recommend that seniors and family members:

  • Know the Texas regulations for Assisted Living: Each state has its own laws and inspections processes to ensure seniors reside in a safe environment. Depending on your state, you may even be able to look up inspection reports for the community(ies) you’re considering. Learn more about Texas regulations for Assisted Living.
