10 Best Nursing Homes in The Woodlands, TX

Answer a few questions to get personalized results

Who are you searching for?

When faced with selecting a nursing home for a loved one, it can be an overwhelming experience, partly due to the ambiguity surrounding the term “nursing home.” Nursing care primarily refers to skilled nursing facilities, and specialized communities providing continuous medical care for individuals with specific health conditions.

While searching for suitable care, considering senior living communities like assisted living or memory care may be more appropriate. These communities offer more independence than skilled nursing care while still providing plenty of care options. Although A Place for Mom does not feature stand-alone listings for skilled nursing facilities, 52 of our partner communities offer assisted living and memory care within a 10-mile radius of The Woodlands downtown district. Each of these communities provides varying levels of care for their residents.

This guide will provide a comprehensive overview of long-term care in The Woodlands, just 25 miles from Houston. It will cover the cost of nursing home care, assisted living, and memory care, along with available payment options, laws and regulations, transportation options, health care, and social opportunities for seniors in The Woodlands and nearby Houston.

How people pay for a nursing home in The Woodlands

When seniors and their families begin considering nursing homes, memory care facilities, and assisted living communities, the cost can become a concern. Determining how to cover care expenses often involves using multiple income sources, such as private pay, VA benefits, Medicaid, Medicare, and public assistance. Each with its own advantages and limitations.

This section will explore how private pay, VA benefits, Medicare, and Medicaid can be used to finance long-term care.

Private pay methods

Seniors and their families have various private pay methods at their disposal to finance the cost of nursing homes, assisted living, or memory care facilities. These methods commonly involve utilizing personal savings, Social Security benefits, pensions, and investment returns. Additionally, there are other options that families often consider, including:

To alleviate the costs associated with senior care, there are several VA resources available for veteran seniors. Before submitting a VA application, we recommend seeking guidance from a local veterans service officer to maximize VA benefits. These officers possess extensive knowledge of the benefits available to veterans and can ensure that eligible seniors receive the full assistance they are entitled to. In The Woodlands, seniors and their families can access these services at the Montgomery County Veterans Service Office, which offers benefits counseling from veterans service officers.

One VA benefit often used by seniors is the Aid and Attendance (A&A) benefit, specifically designed to assist seniors who require help with daily activities, have limited eyesight, or are bedridden due to illness or in a nursing home. The Aid and Attendance (A&A) benefit offers an extra monthly payment added to the VA Pension, which can substantially reduce the financial burden of senior care. Seniors can apply for this benefit online or in person at a regional VA office. Once approved, it provides vital financial support to cover care expenses, allowing the funds to be utilized for any expenses that enhance the recipient’s quality of life.

For seniors seeking assistance with their VA benefits, the Texas Veterans Commission in Austin is a valuable resource. This organization offers support with claims and appeals, guiding veterans through the intricate claims process and ensuring they receive the benefits they are entitled to. Furthermore, veterans services organizations (VSOs) in The Woodlands, including local chapters of the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW), Disabled American Veterans (DAV), and American Legion, provide community support and aid seniors in connecting with relevant resources related to VA benefits.

Medicaid

Medicaid is a government-funded health care program aimed at offering financial support to individuals with limited income, and it can play a role in covering the expenses of nursing care. While Medicaid doesn’t pay for room and board in assisted living and memory care facilities, it will pay for a semi-private room in a skilled nursing facility.

Seniors seeking assistance with health care expenses can often find support through the home and community based services (HCBS) waiver program. This program specifically covers in-homes health care expenses that can be delivered within an assisted living or memory care facility. Each waiver within the program has its own specific eligibility requirements. Services paid for through the HCBS waiver typically include:

  • Skilled nursing care from a registered nurse, licensed practical nurse, or certified nursing assistant
  • Rehabilitation and therapy services
  • Medical supplies and equipment
  • Prescription medication

Applying for these waivers can be done online. However, it is recommended to seek additional guidance from organizations such as the Houston-Galveston Area Agency on Aging or the Aging and Disability Resource Center, as the Medicaid application process can be time-intensive and difficult to understand.

In the event of any complaints or concerns, the Health and Human Services Office of the Ombudsman and the Long-Term Care Ombudsman are accessible resources that offer help in those areas.

Medicare

Medicare provides limited coverage for skilled nursing care. Medicare does not cover nursing homes on a long-term basis, nor does it cover the room and board costs of assisted living or memory care. To be eligible for Medicare Part A skilled nursing facility short-term care, seniors must meet specific criteria:

  • The individual must have days remaining in their benefit period and be enrolled in Part A
  • They must have had a qualifying inpatient stay
  • A physician must have determined that daily skilled care is necessary

To apply for Medicare, individuals can visit their local Social Security office or apply for Medicare online. Seniors in Texas who require additional financial assistance while using Medicare may find support through various available resources.

The Texas Medicare Savings Program is designed to assist individuals who meet specific income criteria by providing support for Medicare premiums, deductibles, and co-insurance costs. Applications for this program can be accessed through the Your Texas Benefits portal.

The Texas Health Information, Counseling, and Advocacy Program offers all Medicare recipients comprehensive financial counseling and Medicare enrollment assistance. This program provides valuable guidance in understanding Medicare benefits and exploring available options.

For seniors needing support, the Houston-Galveston Area Agency on Aging offers counseling and assistance with Medicare benefits, helping individuals navigate through available options. Additionally, the Long-Term Care Ombudsman, which operates within the Area Agency on Aging, is crucial in advocating for seniors and their families. They assist with addressing complaints and claims about long-term care, ensuring seniors receive the support and care they deserve.

Understand Texas laws and regulations for nursing homes

In Texas, nursing home facilities are regulated and licensed by Texas Health and Human Services. Assisted Living Facilities (ALFs) in The Woodlands also have to be licensed and inspected by Texas Health and Human Services. Once approved for a license, the Department of Health and Human Services conducts regular inspections to ensure compliance at least every two years. They also undertake investigations of abuse or neglect, complaint investigations, and follow-up when appropriate. These inspection reports can be accessed online through the provider search portal for anyone interested in reviewing them.

Nursing home facilities are also subject to federal laws and regulations in addition to state laws. Laws and regulations for ALFs in Texas include:

  • A full-time manager must be in place in all facilities
  • Within the first two weeks of admission, each resident must have a complete individual service plan
  • Enough staff to meet all needs, assist with medication management, prepare meals, and provide supervision
  • At least three daily meals must be provided along with snacks.

Memory care, a specialized form of assisted living, is subject to the same regulations as assisted living communities in Texas but with additional requirements imposed by the regulatory authorities around specialized training for staff on how to care for those with memory issues, as well as safety considerations that must be put in place.
