Clean place, needs to update decor. Needs slightly more variety of activities. Health aides are friendly but not enough of them. Can take a long time when you call for help. Ok value for your money.

Somewhat disappointed

Terrace building has a very small "living room" when entering the building where residents watch TV in a community setting. During the winter, I have seen residents wearing hats and coats while watching TV which is poorly located in this building because the door is constantly being opened and the cold air settles right in that sitting area. Requests have been made, to no avail, to put a television in the dining area which would be a warmer location during the winter. Not enough variety in activities for the residents. Residents need more stimulating activities. Activities on the monthly calendar do not often happen. I believe residents are taken care of, however, it's always in the best interest of the resident to have an advocate who sees that things are being taken care of. Of course, this would be the situation no matter where they were living.

Our families experience has not met our expectations

Not a good rating overall... my mom is bedridden so she doesn't do any activities. Most of the Medical Team staff is very unfriendly with the exception of a few that are compassionate and very nice. Food is horrible. Honestly the place is horrible and would not recommend to anyone

Not the place for those needing more help

The facility charged over [removed] per month for full assistance yet many days they did not assist my mother with her bath's, take her down to meals or make sure she took her medicine and I also found pills on the floor. All of this was discussed with the facility. I would not recommend this facility to anyone needing additional help. It's okay for people who don't need assistance. For those you need transport to the dining, help with bathing and medication - this is not the place to put your elderly parents.

Not recommended

The move in was easy, of course. But they have to get you in as a bare minimum before they can not do what they promised as well as they promised to do it. They do not seem to deal with incontinence very well. They don't want to wash more than one trash bag of laundry a week but still complain about the amount of laundry being too much. They never stated there was a laundry limit or that incontinence was a special care need that they don't accommodate. Housekeeping isn't on top of keeping the floor clean either. If you know the resident pees on the floor in the bathroom, it should be checked daily and cleaned. They do not. A family member does it themselves. In addition to laundry they say is too much. They took then returned the only bag they took stating it was too much. Someone there got hold of the new debit card just received for the resident and made a month of Amazon purchases. We know it happened there because the card wasn't used anywhere else and was set up only for the facility to bill to. They do not communicate with the family unless put on the spot. They were not helpful with communicating with the pharmacy/doctor to fix several issues with how the scripts were written and filled. I would not recommend for any high needs resident. Not good with Parkinson's patients who fall a lot and are incontinent. The facility should have laid out, in a clear resident care plan, what they do not do and expect family to do. Too much money being paid for the amount of work still being done by family.

Reasonably Comfortable

I would recommend the community to others for their loved ones. This is a good value for me. Each American House depends on the location and community. This is the best one I have been at. This a good location, it can be hard to get deliveries. The community has transportation available for the residents. There is a podiatrist and barber that come to the community.

Other options for care.

I am not happy with the care at this community. The restrooms do not have fans in the restroom. It appears that they do not have air conditioning. It does appear that a few things are missing from his personal belongings. It appears that they do not always have a lot of staff members at times to help with the care of the residents. The menu seems to be appealing. I would suggest that other families tour this community.

Suspicions validated!

At first glance it appears to be a very nice place. Some of the staff are TRULY very nice and helpful. Some simply put on a good front. The food is NOT all that good. The med team that's supposed to be wonderful.....not so much. I think they will know what I am talking about. If you or your loved one needs a place to go, where you know they will be cared for with love; find a place that has security cameras all over.

I did not have a good experience at American House. There were several things that should not have happened that did happen. 1. They are to help new people meet the other residents in the building. This did not happen. They left my mom at a table in the dining room by herself, placing her at a table with a woman that was known to not eat in the dining room. This was not a new woman - she has lived there for 3 years and picks up her own tray of food and takes it to her room. The woman specifically told me that she prefers to eat alone and if she picks up her food she doesn't have to pay the food delivery fee. Another new woman they sat at that table the weeks previous to my mom moving into this building, didn't like eating alone and began to pay the fee to have her food delivered. 2. There was an argument the 2nd weekend that my mother was there between the cook and one of the young ladies that pass out the food. Mary was slamming dishes and food around. This wasn't the only time I saw the cook do this. It was quite loud and upset my mom and some other women there in the dining room. 3. They consistently woke my mom for breakfast, my mom, in an attempt to try to meet people, would get down to the dining room - only to be served oatmeal or cereal with no milk. There is a refrigerator right next to her table. Sometimes she would get there and have to wait 45 minutes for her breakfast, not being served until 9:15 am. 4. One day she overslept, and didn't get to breakfast until 10:00 am. They told her they couldn't give her anything and she could get some juice and just wait until lunch. She is diabetic - nobody asked anyone to cook anything - if isn't that difficult to give someone a bowl of cereal. 5. She apparently fell and they never notified me. They picked her up and put her in bed. 6. The required emergency button, residents pay to wear - they do not answer. The button was pushed - they came over 10 minutes later. 911 came before anyone checked on her.

Not a Great Experience

We are not very impressed with this place. When we first contacted them, we were under the impression that the residents would be able to go to the grocery store or drug store once a week, but they only go once a month. They have a "store" in the community, but all they have is a couple of Pepsi's, some candy bars, and toilet paper. When the residents have no where to go, they should have a better "store". Also, we were informed that some of the maintenence issues in my loved one's apartment have been going on since before they moved in. For the price, and with no utilities included, they should at least be able to fix a toilet or replace a lightbulb before someone moves in. I thought this would be a supportive environment, with activities, with busses going to the store, and trips and meetings, and people having fun, and that is not how this is turning out to be. My loved one is happy about the inside of the apartment and being able to have a cat, and the set up is nice. However, they really need an improvement of staff. They need people who have a heart for other people. It would be nice if they had a better staff who were in touch with the needs of the residents.
