Cost of assisted living in Louisiana

The median monthly cost of assisted living in Louisiana is about $4,100, which is significantly less expensive than the approximate national median monthly cost of assisted living, which is $4,800, according to A Place for Mom’s internal data from its brand partners. For budget-aware seniors, this is a difference of $700 a month compared to the national median.

It’s a good idea to look at median costs instead of average costs because median costs aren’t normally influenced by extreme values, such as high-amenity communities or budget-friendly communities located in the state. In Louisiana, the 10th percentile monthly cost is around $3,100, while the 90th percentile monthly cost is about $6,000.

The cost of assisted living varies among communities. However, pricing typically takes into account the level of care required by a resident. The community’s location, floor plans, services, and amenities also influence cost. In Louisiana, communities may be priced higher in areas closer to desired amenities, such as the Gulf Coast beaches and the New Orleans metro. While these assisted living costs in Louisiana may feel pricey in comparison to the cost of living, some Louisianans may qualify for Medicaid or Medicare. These programs can cover some costs associated with senior living.

Paying for assisted living in Louisiana

Planning ahead for assisted living costs is key. Your loved one can potentially pay for assisted living in Louisiana through a combination of private and public pay options. In the section below, you’ll find a variety of resources that can be used to cover assisted living costs in this state. To learn more about payment options, visit our complete guide to paying for long-term care.

Private pay options available to seniors can be used to pay for expenses related to assisted living in Louisiana.

Selling a home in Louisiana can help your loved one pay for assisted living costs. Selling a house

If your loved one has substantial equity in their home in Louisiana, they may be able to access that money through a reverse mortgage. Reverse mortgage

If your loved one uses a health savings account, they may be able to use that toward the costs of assisted living in Louisiana. Health savings accounts

Your loved one may be able to leverage their life insurance policy to pay for assisted living costs in Louisiana. Life insurance

Ask your loved one if they have a long-term care insurance policy, as it may cover their assisted living costs in Louisiana. Long-term care insurance

Eligible seniors can use Social Security benefits to help them pay for assisted living costs in Louisiana. Social Security benefits for assisted living

Your loved one may be able to reduce the need for private pay options by qualifying for VA benefits. Many veterans, veteran spouses, surviving spouses, and other military-connected individuals may not be aware that they are eligible for VA benefits that can help cover the cost of assisted living in Louisiana.

It can be helpful to seek benefits counseling to learn about the benefits available to your family member. The Louisiana Department of Veterans Affairs (LDVA) offers benefits counseling and other support to military-connected individuals. LDVA is headquartered in Baton Rouge and has more than 20 LDVA veteran service locations throughout the state. Seniors can read through the LDVA Guide to Veterans Benefits to discover benefits available in Louisiana.

Veterans service organizations may also be able to provide support for Louisiana’s veterans. You can find them through the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs eBenefits portal. Click on “Find a new Representative” and apply via mail or fax to search for VSOs by your ZIP code.

The Louisiana Department of Health administers the Medicaid program in this state. As a joint federal and state program, Medicaid in Louisiana provides health care insurance to eligible low-income people. Louisianans can apply online for Medicaid through the Louisiana Medicaid Self-Service Portal or by calling 1-888-342-6207. It can cover some eligible costs, such as personal assistance services, assistive devices, and medical supplies, associated with assisted living for qualified participants through the Community Choices Waiver. Eligible seniors can apply for this program by calling 877-456-1146. There may be a waitlist for this program.

As a federal health care program, Medicare covers eligible health care costs for qualified individuals 65 or older. This program doesn’t cover room and board assisted living costs in Louisiana. However, it may help pay for other costs associated with assisted living. These typically include medically necessary care as determined by Medicare and a qualified doctor. For example, the following may be covered:

  • Doctor services and outpatient care
  • Durable medical equipment
  • Preventative care services

Louisiana’s seniors can contact the Louisiana Department of Insurance’s Senior Health Insurance Information Program, commonly called SHIIP. This program helps provide personalized assistance with Medicare enrollment.

If your loved one has questions or need further assistance with long-term care and related issues in Louisiana, they can connect with the Louisiana Ombudsman Program for additional support.

Assisted living requirements and regulations in Louisiana

The Louisiana Department of Health licenses and oversees four levels of what they call “adult residential care providers.” The levels are as follows:

  • Level 1: Personal care homes
  • Level 2: Shelter care homes
  • Level 3: Assisted living facilities
  • Level 4: Adult residential care

Typically, facilities have to meet state requirements to receive initial licensing. In Louisiana, reports about inspections and violations of assisted living regulations are usually not available to the public.

The department of health determines health standards for adult residential care providers. These include but are not limited to regulations on the following:

  • Time frame for medication reviews
  • Plans of care provided by third-party providers
  • Process for medication administration
  • Storage of medications and controlled substances
  • Application of CPAP masks
  • Determination of a resident’s representative
  • Food preparation and safety measures

Transparency is limited when it comes to caregiver qualifications in Louisiana. If you’re interested in learning more about the qualifications of caregivers, ask prospective communities about the following topics:

  • The community’s staff training protocols
  • Specific areas of staff expertise
  • Community policies regarding staff certifications
  • Community policies regarding continuing education
