TerraBella Durham

Case in point: when we moved [name removed] into the facility, he had an entirely new wardrobe. His wardrobe does not include multi-pocket or zippered pants, button-down shirts, or lace-up shoes. [name removed] is naturally exit-seeking, but our family observed that when he wears those types of clothing, his anxiety increases and his exit-seeking behaviors intensify. We explained this clearly to the Memory Care Director when [name removed] first moved into the facility. One evening, a staff member called to report that [name removed] was very anxious and insisting on leaving the facility. I asked, “What is he wearing?” I think the aide was surprised by the question, but she answered, “He’s wearing a pair of khakis.” I told her, “[name removed] doesn’t have khakis at Terrabella. He’s wearing someone else’s clothes — and that’s why he’s anxious and trying to leave.” They coaxed him into his pajamas, and shortly afterward, they called back to say he was a completely different person — calm, relaxed, and content, which is [name removed] usual demeanor. When the Memory Care Director, [name removed], learned about the incident, she immediately implemented a new evening policy for [name removed] and his roommate. The second-shift staff no longer lay out the residents’ clothes at bedtime in [name removed] room, because in the morning [name removed] would pick up his roommate’s clothes and put them on. It’s now the morning staff’s responsibility to take out the clothes for both residents and ensure each person dresses in their own outfit. Since this change, the problem has not happened again. We’re very appreciative that [name removed] retrained the staff and put a resolution in place so quickly. Her attentiveness and leadership made a real difference for [name removed] — and for our peace of mind as his family.

Your loved one still needs you

Recognizing limitations of staffing it is important to advocate and stay involved with your love one's care. My husband excessive weight loss, increase cognitive impairment and repeated falls. I had discussions of this concern with staff. Also staff failed to follow up with shift reports as staff were unaware of critical incidents occurring from one shift to another such as falls emergency room visits.

They do great considering the way we treat old folks in the country.

Dad hates the food. That's my only piece of info. I like the rec lady, but she's only one and the activities are mainly focused on non active folks. No outings. Whole system is bad unless you're able to pay 11k a month. The Addison does pretty good considering

Shaping up to be a great facility

The facilities are top notch - newly renovated, attractive. The staff is excellent; warm and friendly, they know patient by name and recognize family members. They are pretty responsive to needs and requests. I would like to see someone staffing the reception desk more frequently, and the monthly activities calendar needs to be in large print so residents can read it. But overall, one of the best facilities I've seen in the Triangle.

If I win the lottery I will move him

They have one care giver to 6 residents. Most in memory care really need much more attention My husband has falling 3 times and gotten 9 staples in his head and got a brain bleed I have the VA helping me with 20 hours a week one on one care that come into Addison Monday thur Friday 1pm to 5pm to make sure he doesn't fall. I really can't afford to put him in a more expensive facility and from what I hear under staff and under care everywhere is pretty common. For the most part, the older staff are more attentive, whereas the younger staff are on the phone and lazy. Also men are not attended to as fast or as often as the women. I just feel I have to spend more time at Addison to care for him myself. They tell me he refuses showers so they cannot make him shower however it's always the young staff that tell me this and Addison gives the residents different care givers every single day.

Not recommended

My mom was briefly a resident at The Addison. The staff seemed decent. Communication with the family was lacking. The move in process was okay (the maintenance guy was great). The staff did not seem very attentive to my loved one. Her room had old food in it. Based on our experience, I cannot recommend the facility to others.

My loved one is currently a resident at The Addison and the experience has been very good, so far. They recently worked with me to lower my loved one's base rate so that she can stay there longer. I would recommend this facility to others. My only concern is the turnover with the RNs, but the rest of the staff is stable.

We enjoy The Addison because the staff is friendly. They speak when they see you and are available for any questions. The facility is clean and has plenty of space for my grandmother to get in her daily steps. The rooms are a great size to keep her from feeling closed in. It was the only facility that we toured that felt like home. I would recommend this facility to anyone searching for a new home for their loved one. I sleep well at night because I feel like we made the best decision.

Such a caring environment

The Memory Care staff go over and above getting to know the residents. [name removed], the Director of Memory Care is awesome! She treats every resident like they are a member of her family. She is so caring and wants what’s best for each resident. She is knowledgeable and very professional. She is a role model for less experienced staff and if she sees someone struggling she is on it! This has been a hard transition for us and she has definitely made it a bit easier! The Addison is very clean environment as well.

My loved one was previously a resident at The Addison for a short time and her experience at this facility was okay. I feel that they need to be more attentive to the residents. Highly recommend, friendly attentive staff. Positive experience.

I will rate all questions a 5. The staff at the time my mother in law was there (2019) was the most helpful and friendly. They did have some turnover, but that us to be expected. The thing that stuck out most about The Addison was the cleanliness of the facility and the interest of care for their residents. I would absolutely recommend this community, As long as the administrative staff that was there in 2019 is still there. Otherwise I would not know much about their service, etc.

Run AWAY!!!

They were great with intake, and marketing. There was a number of issues. They did have a lot of residents, or staff. My loved one received minimal care, and their level of awareness and conscientiousness dropped after being there. It looks good on the outside, but they did not have a lot for my loved one to do. They did not have padding on the floor, or rails to keep the residents safe. They had hardwood floors, and it did not seem safe. My loved one tried to get out of bed, and fell, which caused serious injuries. She ended up passing. They refused to give me a refund. What they represented, you did not get. I would not recommend anyone going here.

My tour of The Addison

I toured this facility and would NOT recommend it based off of our tour. I don't know if we just caught them on a bad day, but we stood in the lobby for about 15 minutes before we were even greeted. The maintenance man is the one who gave us our tour. We weren't able to get information on pricing or anything while there for the tour. We were not impressed with the process or the facility.

The tour felt cold and was not very friendly. They went through the motions and showed us the usual things, but they didn't seem very interested in having us pursue the admission. Also, when I asked around in our social/professional network, I heard a general consensus of severe staffing shortages and poor care.

Tips for evaluating your community options

Safety is a primary concern when seniors and their families look for Assisted Living. To ensure that a community meets your needs and expectations, we recommend that seniors and family members:

  • Tour the location: Touring allows you to speak to current residents and staff, and helps you confirm the accuracy of the community description and photos. Use our touring checklist to help guide your visit.

  • Confirm the availability of required services: Before you commit, make sure that the community offers all the services your senior needs, and that those services can be provided within your budget.

  • Know the North Carolina regulations for Assisted Living: Each state has its own laws and inspections processes to ensure seniors reside in a safe environment. Depending on your state, you may even be able to look up inspection reports for the community(ies) you’re considering. Learn more about North Carolina regulations for Assisted Living.

A Place for Mom has scored The Addison 8.6 out of 10 using our proprietary review score.

We assign review scores to give a more reliable view into senior living communities and home care agencies. Our review scores prioritize reviews that are recent — the past 24 months — because we know families need current information when choosing senior care.

Those with many recent, positive reviews receive a high review score, while providers with few recent reviews — regardless of how positive — receive a lower review score. Communities with no recent reviews will not have a review score, even if older reviews are positive. The maximum A Place for Mom review score a community can receive is 10 points.
