Clean, Modern Community with Chinese Speaking Care Staff and Residents

The community is well staffed, clean, there are a lot of Chinese speaking residents and care staff and meals. The billing is a nightmare due to broken communication from the community to their corporate office. This seems to make it more of a nightmare for the families as well. There is limited parking; however, the community is willing to work with you during the move in process.

Too Corporate

I think you should consider looking around some more before deciding on Brookdale Alhambra. We had problems with billing. We were promised a certain amount for rent each month when we moved in, and invoicing has not been accurate. Food was an issue - it wasn't really geared toward the needs of the residents. Rates are raised significantly every year. The executive director has been working with us to address our concerns, and she's been helpful . But the main office has been giving us grief.

Memory Care
February 7, 2020

This former hotel is showing its age and was currently undergoing some renovation. The Manager, [name removed], was very nice and accommodating and gave us a tour of the memory care building across the street from the main building. It seemed to be adequately secure and clean although lacking in any charm. The residents in both buildings were just sitting in their wheelchairs staring forward--not engaging in conversation. It was a tad depressing.

I really liked the executive director and the staff I met. I liked the activities and how active and involved the residents were. Disappointed in the age of the building and the location and parking. I called the front desk and was quickly let into their parking structure, but there is very little street parking and their structure is not very big. The garden courtyard is nice, but I wish there were more trees and more outdoor space- on busy, loud Reseda Blvd. I will go back and visit again. Decided this was too far from family...

Wonderful facility but nursing staff is horrible

The transition here for my Father has been difficult. It’s a nice building and all of the caregivers, sales staff, and receptionists have been nice. They really seem to care and they always greet us by name. The building is well maintained and has no odor like you would expect. However, the nursing staff and management of the nursing staff have been horrible and rude. There is no consistency with them. My dad runs out of his medications frequently and doesn’t refill them for days. My dad is still really smart and he has broken down crying because he doesn’t know what will happen when he starts forgetting things. He’s pointed out the inconsistency with his medications a few times because he was missing some of them. We are paying extra money for services we are not receiving. Otherwise the facility is wonderful. They are very proactive when it comes to the flu outbreak. They keep everything quarantined so it doesn’t spread. I would recommend this facility but you need to be aware of how much you have to keep an eye on the medications.

Wasn't Going To Be For My Mother At All

The community was nice very nice staff. However, from what I was told the residents that lived there were primarily of the Jewish Faith and the community would not celebrate any of the other holidays such as Christmas which is my moms favorite holiday. So with that being said even though the staff was nice and it looked like a decent community the fact she would have to sacrifice her holidays wasn't going to be an option for us.

Did Not Like Community

I knew as soon as I walked in that this community was not going to be a good fit for my mother. The community was very dated and depressing. They had no designated areas for activities or a specified common room to watch tv or read. It was just a simple very slow paced community not a lot going on. There were residents sleeping not doing much of anything. The staff was nice and very friendly

Not enough staff !!

I am concerned that every time my aunt rings her bell for help from one of the aids it takes sometimes up to an hour for a response. I don't know if they are under staffed or the aids are just busy but that needs to be improved quickly. I also am concerned with how the upstairs does not have the same fresh air as the downstairs lobby. There is always a weird smell once you get off the elevator on the second floor.

The pricing is reasonable!!

My mom was only at this community for a short time. We found it was just not a good fit for her. She needed a little more supervision than they offered. They did not offer a lot of activities to keep her active. They try to keep the community clean, however it is a dated building. I would recommend this community if you are looking for the base necessities for assisted living. The staff were nice and the food seemed average.

A Lovely Community

My uncle is doing okay here at this community. They are trying their best to care for him and needs. This is a lovely community. The staff is kind and very caring. There are time when I have to ask for his room to be cleaned better, but they respond very quickly. They do a good job with keeping the general areas clean. There are great activities offered for the residents. He isn't to pleased with the foods, they need more of a variety of food. He is in good hand, and being cared for very well.

A good value for Santa Monica

While the staff is very friendly overall, there really isn't much 'assistance' here unless you hire caregivers to attend to your loved one's needs. If your senior relative needs help in the shower, that will be an extra charge. Medications to be given - that will incur a charge. The facility needs a walk-in soaking tub that residents can make a reservation for and have assistance. Sometimes a person's joints hurt and a good hot bath would help. There is a 'shower' room on the second floor that could be converted to a bath room - that would be a needed amenity. If a senior has a private caregiver to help them, they cannot partake of the outings unless there is room for the caregiver, so that is a bummer. Sometimes dinner portions could be larger also - especially of favorites like mashed potatoes. I don't recall if there was a pizza night, but that might be a good idea to liven up things. A good value in a great locale, but anything you might think is included is not, and the little extras will add up. Parking can also be a problem if you come during popular visiting hours, as the garage is rented out to another business and there is limited guest parking. The street parking in Santa Monica is worse, so you are lucky if you can get parking downstairs and probably shouldn't complain. The carpet needs to be cleaned better, as one area looks like it has yellow, indebted vomit. When the carpet is cleaned, it seems to only be with water.

Very close to my home and could provide transportation to my follow-up appt at Kaiser Fontana. The facility itself needs better maintenance and cleaning overall.Cobweb's on the ceiling in the main lobby, stained carpets in some hallways, the elevator looks like it never gets cleaned or vacuumed and there is a lingering odor throughout the facility. I went by on another day to get paperwork and was taken care of by a pleasant young gentleman named Michael. I think he is one of the managers. He made me feel very welcome and assured me that they could do whatever I needed to make my stay comfortable and invited me come back for a second tour to see rooms other than the original one I was shown which was at the far end of a hallway across from a room that had the door open and had the worst order coming from it. Overall, this facility is not as clean or well maintained as it could be but I am still considering it due to they being able to provide transportation to my follow-up appt and it being close enough for family to visit.
