Mixed experience

We had a somewhat mixed experience with Eskaton Lodge. They really try hard to win you over during the sales process, and in fairness to them I think that the care they provide is very good. However, I feel like their billing system and business practices in general could have been more straightforward and upfront. During the course of his stay my loved one ended up moving into their memory care unit. When he'd shown some improvement we asked if it was possible to move him back to the assisted living portion. They told us there was absolutely no way due to regulations. Until, that is, we mentioned possibly moving him to a different facility. Then they were completely willing to try that, and even went as far as to start giving our loved one tours of other apartments without notifying us, which I thought was a little underhanded. I also feel like they go a little overboard with the extra fees for various services, that is something you really need to keep an eye on or things get expensive fast.

Nice place, but it was pricy and I didn't see a lot of evidence of folks actually conducting a program for those in the mental area. In checking the State Databases, I did have some concern about the number of complaints and inspection findings.

Review of Eskaton Monroe Lodge Independent Living in Sacramento, CA

Older building very sturdy cinder block. Nice large units no 2 bedrooms. Price includes one meal a day, cost more for more meals, but has big kitchen area. Too far from Elk Grove. No assisted living areas, no nurses on staff

VERY expensive. Feels like there is a Corporate incentive to increase rates & always seem to look for ways to do so. Food temperature could be improved. Bedrooms are cold. Heater is in living area. Electric blankets are not allowed...understood but then where's the heater?

My opinion

I was not impressed with this community when I visited it. The memory care area felt depressing and there was a slight odor. The music they were playing was older country and the staff did not seem to be interacting with the residents. The person that took us on tour was nice. This community would not work for my loved one.

Sometimes help is needed when moving into a new environment

The general manager is not very proactive about problems senior residents encounter when they move into a facility from homes they have lived in for any years. My mother continued to eat alone in the dining room or skip meals entirely until I spoke to the gen manager and others about this. Even senior facilities have cliques like high school. No patience with pets adjusting to having maintenance people invading their space. It would have made things easier if maintenance people had taken the time to know the pet instead of becoming an intruder in their space.

Not Much Activity

I visited that place. That was just more depressing. It just seemed like not a lot of activity was going on. It was just old people in a building. it was not good and not what I wanted for my mom.

I'm sorry I couldn't have helped her more.

My mother was placed in this Eskaton in 2016, and passed away in February 2018. During the time she was there she sustained approx. 10 falls, the last one face first on the bathroom floor, where she laid for some length of time before she was found with a fatal brain bleed. My sister had medical control of our mother, so any complaints or concerns I had were just seen as meddling. I was never called or informed of my mother's many falls, I would find out from my mother, or from a bandaged cut, or broken bone. In fact, as time went on, I felt entirely unwelcome there. I limited my visits to Sunday afternoons when I could avoid hostile staff... the Sunday staff was great. Small requests of mine were completely ignored. My mother lost a great deal of weight, and she didn't want to eat. I asked if she could have a protein shake for a snack. I was never given an answer. I asked if she could have a vitamin pill... her doctor refused to acknowledge me or my request. She never got either. Her death was by far the worst of it... because she was so frail, but wanted to get out of bed. She needed round the clock care during those final weeks, but didn't get it. I came in during evenings to find her alone, and/or blocked into her bed with furniture. She needed someone there, but only got it part of the time. I've worked full time in the medical field for 30 years. I know what my mother should have had, and I am so sorry I couldn't make it happen.

Reutlinger - Not Recommended

Unfortunately, I have to disagree with the other reviewers. My mother has lived at Reutlinger in Assisted Living for more than 3 years. During that time, the organization has experienced much staff turnover, reduced its activities program and is generally poorly managed. I can't recommend Reutlinger at this time.

Eskaton

My mother was staying at Eskaton before moving to another community. I would not recommend Eskaton to anyone. One of the physical therapists there wrote in the notes that my mother could walk over 100 feet, but the fact is that she could not walk over 10. Because of this mistake in the notes, my mother was denied Medicare benefits for a wheelchair, and we had to pay out of pocket for a wheelchair to use in her new community. Eskaton also chose to discharge my mother because she was not making progress. It was devastating to us that this happened, and I would not even think about putting a loved one here again.
