A Place for Mom has scored Kisco Senior Living with 8.3 out of 10 using our proprietary review score based on 104 reviews in the last 2 years. Over all time, Kisco Senior Living has 986 reviews with an average "overall experience" of 4.6 out of 5.
Avoid KISCO and Park Terrace at all costs! The director, (who is still there) raised my mother's care level price and moved her up to the next care level EVEN THOUGH HER CARE NEEDS DID NOT CHANGE. He rudely and stubbornly would not bend. I filed a complaint with the County and they asked my permission to escalate the complaint to the State Office in Sacramento. I said yes. Both of my complaints were SUSTAINED. I moved Mom somewhere else. The Orange County attorney for Senior Social Services called me and thanked me personally for all of my efforts which exposed and protected vulnerable seniors at Park Terrace who were being financially taken advantage of.

am writing a review of the memory care at Crestavilla- I had a family member under their care for the last few years and they do not have the staffing or expertise to take care of patients if they have moderate or progressive dementia. They admit they don't have the staff and will ask you to pay for additional nursing care. They accepted him into the residence but then when he got worse they kicked him out. First they will increase your fees astronomically to get you to move and if that doesn't work they will evict you. After being evicted since he required too much care, I moved my family member to another facility but it has been a traumatic transition. I recommend to avoid Crestavilla Memory care for family members that have progressive dementia.

Dad in Assisted Living with dementia flooded his apartment and two below it. It was not properly cleaned up and staff left him in an apartment that was mildewing around him for two weeks until I visited, complained, and filed a report with Social Services. At that point they moved him to their "respite room" without his cane or cat. Dad fell without his cane, cat was left in mildewing room with industrial dryers and cat was traumatized. Director was utterly unhelpful. Dad had also developed incontinence issues and I, his POA, had not been informed. Found out by tripping over soiled underwear in his room. They do his laundry & should have noticed. I was a independent living resident at Balfour-Ann Arbor for 7 months - the first resident to move in when they opened in November 2019 and the first to leave in June 2020. In my opinion, this is NOT a good place for anyone to live, let let alone any senior! Most of the foregoing is the tip of the iceberg, but in a nutshell, what I have written says plenty to raise a huge “red flag” to potential residents of any Balfour facility, since they are all owned and managed by the Corporation Headquarters in Colorado. Balfour-Ann Arbor has 3 areas of living - Independent, Assisted and Memory Care. I was looking for a facility that had these things, but I wanted them to all be physically separated and that the areas did not co-mingle. I was assured more than once, and by more than one person, that each had their own dining room and there was no mixing of residents. I told the leasing persons on more than one occasion when I checked a few times about the areas being separated that I would not move into Balfour if the 3 areas co-mingled. Again, I was always assured that they did not co-mingle and that is one way Balfour was different than other places of this type. In about February, 2020, a situation arose that made me question whether that was indeed the case after I moved in. At that time, I asked the person I talked to on more than one occasion when I was looking into Balfour the exact opposite. She indicated that the three areas could mix and use any and all parts of the facility and that anyone could eat in any dining room they wanted. I was shocked to say the least. I checked with a couple of others who signed up about the same time I did and they were told the same thing I was. In my opinion, the Ann Arbor facility is totally disorganized and chaotic in almost every respect, except for the kitchen staff. The original staff, as well as many many subsequent employees, have either quit or been fired and nothing gets done that you ask for over and over, if at all, and you continue to pay for services you do not receive. Balfour is like an employee revolving door and has never been fully staffed. except maybe on day 1. And, a large number of employees are incompetent and/or have insufficient on-the-job training and supervision to do their jobs. If they are competent, they have too much work to do because of understaffing and are unable to speak up for fear of losing their jobs and end up quitting at some point. The Associate Executive Director, who took over when the Corporation fired the Executive Director shortly after the facility opened, is overwhelmed with so many jobs to do; thus, he cannot possibly keep up. In addition, medical updates sent to the residents on a regular basis by the Corporation were almost always glowing about how well Balfour and the residents were doing keeping the virus out of their facilities. However, in Ann Arbor, in all instances but one, they never really informed residents there about the fact that the facility had never been risk free from anyone getting the virus in the facility. This was because of, among other things, selected resident behaviors and contradictory and/or misinformation from the Corporation about the length of time someone needed to be in quarantine, which put everyone at risk continually for months. The “Balfour Way,” as they call it by the Corporation, REALLY means to give you as little as possible, despite what their literature and the Corporation says, and for residents to not complain. And, if you do, they threaten you with legal action and termination of your lease, like they did with me. In addition, they charge you a lot of money to live there that basically pays for all the decorating “fluff” and hollow promises of what they will be doing for you. Both of these things are part of the hook to sell you on this facility. The COVID-19 virus was not the problem, it just exposed a myriad of systemic problems with this Corporation that one might not have noticed right away under normal circumstances, but they sure became apparent quickly when you tried to get even the simplest of things done here before and during the virus. This is not to say that local staff are unresponsive. They are polite about requests and employees are nice to the residents, but there is largely no resolution to any of your complaints and requests. Since, Balfour-Ann Arbor is only 7 months old, I would highly suggest that you research the other Balfour facilities and access sites online that give accounts of other resident reviews of all the other Balfour properties (in Colorado) and their experiences with this Corporation and things that people were/are not happy with at those facilities BEFORE signing up to live in one of their facilities. I would also read online internet reviews of employee experiences at other Balfour facilities. There are only 2 reviews of the Ann Arbor property from employees - one positive and one negative - and no reviews by any residents (current or former) except mine. But, I personally know at least one other person that is leaving Balfour Ann Arbor soon and residents continue to complain about things there that never get addressed. For some unknown reason to me, they still don’t realize after six months of complaining that they never will. I lived and learned, and I hope I can save someone else from making the same mistake or at least be fully informed.

First of all, the facility is beautiful and seems to be one of the nicest communities around this area. The advertise that they a a cruise ship on land experience, but don't let this fool you it is not all what it seems. They want to want to maximum their services to make more money for services that may not needed the by resident. When my mom arrived she was recovering from surgery and on the to road recovery. However, rather then moving her forward they held her back so that she would need more services therefore increasing their revenue. This approach ensured that she did not progress. Whenever I had financial questions they never responded unless they didn't receive payment, then I got their attention.

On the upside: Nice residents, beautiful building, beautiful courtyard, nice staff. On the downside: A bait and switch approach to pricing. My mom moved to assisted living several years ago, thinking she would be safe and cared for. It was expensive, but she had saved for it. However, within two years, even the basic services were cut, while the prices DOUBLED!!! She has to count every item of clothing and put it on a list in order to have the laundry done. The consequence is that they do almost no laundry for her. The brunch that we heard so much about was cut to every other week. Bathrooms are not renovated to be handicap accessible unless you pay for it. Twice we pushed her button for help and NO ONE CAME FOR 45 MINUTES. Residents who need help with socks or other minor things, end up just doing it themselves, because no one shows up for 30-40 minutes. But the worst part is that the cost for care is absolutely unpredictable and every little thing adds to a points system that even the managers have trouble explaining without a computer. My mom feels like she can't breathe differently without being charged for it. This was not what we were sold. Imagine planning for your future and having the costs double! It has put her in a state of anxiety and we are thinking of moving her again. Not what you want for your aging parent.

Assisted living was the worst at my.mothers end of life. At a time you would expect exemplary service she got very poor care insisting she get her own food off of her bkfst table even when she couldn't walk. I would never recommend assisted to anyone considering magnolia glen and am shocked by the lack.of concern for the residents. Magnolia should be ashamed of themselves epecially from.the amt of money she spent

Worst service ever for people at the end of their life. When they want the care they don't get it. Left alone in a room by themselves with no compassion. Very short staffed and can't possibly give all those residents the care they so desperately need. Why bother having your loved ones health go downhill. Think twice before putting them here!

Once people become more ill and require more care, Magnolia Glen pushes people to move out. They are not interested in helping with compassionate and loving end of life. They want active people who require little help or support. Even thought they were "assisted living" we had to pay for our own private help since there was not enough MG staff to help all the residents. If you have a family member looking for a place to stay until their death, look elsewhere unless you want them to be pushed out to a new place at the most vulnerable time of their life.

We were very happy with Balfour when my parents moved into Independent Living over 3 years ago. Then the changes came, a percentage was sold to a Corporation. Staff that had been with Balfour from the beginning left. The food has completely gone down hill with few items being made from scratch. And worst of all, an unwilling and unqualified management not responding to complaints. I would steer clear of Balfour.

My mother has had been a resident of the atria woodbridge facility for a number of years, but recently we have moved her to a different independent living facility. When we first found Atria Woodbridge, it was a heart place with residents living indepently. However, probably do to the state of the ecomony, the are now accepting residents with Alzheimer's and those that need around the clock care. The quality of the overall care as well as the staff has diminished significantly. Atria Woodbridge now resembles a convalescent care home instead of an independent living facility. There is a high level of turnover in staff, and this includes leadership roles. Caregiver staff includes waiters and kitchen staff that is not trained for cafe giving. There is minimal offering of activities as there activit director is not engaged with residents and most activities have a childish, birthday party feel. These are adults not two year olds. Services offered have also decreased. Due to the increasing number of residents that require focused and routine attention, the independent residents are now experiencing less than quality services, longer response times. Quality of dinning area experience and food also is more like a cafateria with little options and lack of creativity. The fact that Atria Woodbridge leadership is disengaged with its residents shows that this facility, which could be the flagship of its So Cal locations is quickly becoming nothing more than convalescent facility. My mother has moved to a location that is a little further for our family, but she is extremely pleased and the leadership is engaged with both residents and their families.

The care I received was so bad that I moved to a new facility. Call lights were not answered, the aides turn the lights off quickly, they know they are monitored, and then don’t return to help you. The nurses station phones all go to voicemail so you can’t call for help. It’s not a very caring place.

No alarms on doors in the Alzheimers Unit. This is a serious problem, given the lax monitoring in the halls at night. Or overworked, very young aides. Let's give them that. But a very serious attack happened in the evening (not late) hours, resulting in our mother being thrown out, bag and baggage at 10 pm. We had to scramble to find a bed for her THAT NIGHT. She was there for her own and others' protection, which didn't happen. Door alarms, people. And someone monitoring the hall at all times.
