Mixed

I have mixed emotions about Rancho Mirage. I do like it and would recommend it,, i am not a fan of certain colors they used in certain places. People or painters need to FEEL the room before they just paint with any color . I would like to see it painted different colors.

Memory Care
December 11, 2014

My Mother has lived at Emeritus for five years. She appreciates and enjoys the staff members.Though they are overworked and underpaid. She's very reclusive and will not dine in the dinning room. She suffers from advanced neuropathy and has trouble feeding herself. She was an excellent cook, a successful career woman who traveled extensively, and for work and pleasure. Today you would call her a "foodie". The food at this facility is terrible. It pains me to see her try to eat it. She often gives up and drinks a "Glucerna" just for the nutritional value. It pains me to see her try to eat that horrible food. When they were bought out by Brookdale, there were a few days when the food was good. Apparently, Brookdale had sent a cook down to try to teach the staff how to cook. Mother marveled at the good food and was so delighted. That last only about three days. Now the food it back to bad. It's a shame since the facility is so nice in every other way. If you folks or loved one doesn't care about food quality I would recommended this facility.

A Little Understaffed

We're not entirely thrilled with Emeritus at Carmel Valley. There wasn't enough staff is the dining room. What happened, I think, is a bunch of people moved in and they didn't have the staff to cover it. It's gotten better in the last week or so but once two people from the dining room called in sick and my parents had to wait and hour and a half to get there food. Another time, I happened to be visiting and it took a caretaker over 30 minutes to come when they were called and then she said she was washing clothes. I asked her, isn't responding to a call more important? It just seems to me that they're kind of short staffed. It might be a problem that can be alleviated. My parents have a two bedroom apartment and it's very stressful because my dad has Alzheimer's so my mom is anxious that he's going to get up and fall so we're considering moving him but I have to say they're very nice over there.

Used to be Great, now so-so.

I placed my loved one here in Memory Care (MC) in 2023 when the facility was owned by Generations. Since the announcement of the sale to Bayshire last year, the place has gone down hill. The facility is in a major need of a face lift with filthy carpet in the common areas and a leaky roof in the MC dining room. The food has also gone down hill with poor selections at many meals for MC patients. The bright spot is the tenured MC Care Staff and Med Techs who really care about the residents and treat them as if they were their own family. Unfortunately, they appear to be overworked, underpaid, and frequently short staffed, especially on the weekends. New management appears to be trying to remedy the situation, but progress has and continues to be really slow. At one point, I was recommending the facility to many people in the various support groups I attend. However, when people ask me today, I tell them to look elsewhere and have considered moving my loved one myself.

Our Experience

Care staff, med techs and housekeeping staff are great! Upper management, not so much. They won't answer email, phones or texts without asking or sending 2nd requests. Communication is good when loved one has an issue. Move in was a joke, didn't complete paperwork until 2 weeks after already moved in. Meals are plentiful, sometimes served cold, salads could be fresher and meal times are too early with only one hour for each meal but they do have an all day menu of a few items. They should email family members about resident meetings, special events, monthly/daily activity lists. My brother and I visit our loved one twice a week and even then we miss some upcoming events. They need to post things throughout the community instead of just at front desk. We toured 10 communities before Mom chose this one, it was less expensive than others with a couple courtyards (they need to keep better maintained, dirty furniture and fountains not working.) The apartments are small, but clean and nice. Building needs a little upgrade on the outside and the windows could be cleaned a couple times a year. Carpet inside (halls, dining, etc) needs deep cleaning or replaced. The front entrance outside is very large with seating, which our Mom loves.

Not the right fit

If I had a little bit more money I think I would move my loved one out. They are extremely understaffed. The administrative staff are very difficult to get a hold of, if they do get back to us the promises that are made are not withheld. I think that if your loved one is more mobile, it may be a better facility for them.

Like the Placentia place better because of the rooms. The resident rooms all have a sliding glass door and balcony. Having a room with lots of windows, and natural lighting is important for my mom's eye site. She also loves to sit on the porch. Everything else was comparable so Placentia won out over this one.

Just alright

It is going alright here. They leave her in her room too much. I have talked to them about this twice. I told the staff that they need to take her down for activities. They say they ask her and she says she does not want to go. Well, she is confused, so they need to make more of an effort. She is depressed and she says that all she does is sit in her room and look out the window. She is starting to talk like she may as well not be here. The staff needs to get on top of this. It has been a couple of weeks since I mentioned taking her down for activities and still nothing.

watch everything like a hawk

This is an update to the most recent review cautioning anyone to have an advocate here or anywhere. Today My mother was given her 8 am pills at 11am. Totally unacceptable. STaff member said they were understaffed. I told the director to get out in the hallway and fill in for the missing med tech . Time sensitive pills must be given close to the dosage time. This evening the med tech gave the pills prior to dinner being delivered to the unit. Dinner was delivered 45 minutes late because they were again understaffed. Again I have told the managers that they need to fill in for their missing staff. It is terrible to give a very elderly person dinner after 7pm and to have given the sleeping pills early before they even ate. If you are not on top of this place every single day, you will have no confidence that they have it together.

Caring staff but beware of the promised "sell".

As in every facility if you do not have an advocate involved in every single aspect of your family's care, you are potentially in big trouble. As is often the case the staff for the most part are helpful, kind, and caring. But beware. There is poor coordination. We moved our family member in on a Monday. There was no one there to execute the transition. It took 2 weeks to get the bill correct, to get the call system to be activated, to get thru a full few weeks with all the players who needed intervention in order to get the needs of our family member executed properly. They are understaffed and in some cases poorly staffed. The activities are uninspired and 50 percent of what is on the schedule does not happen. It is all to sell the place. Often one has to call the front desk to have a bathroom in the public spaces cleaned, or to turn the lights on out front at night, or to clean up the dog poop from the resident dog. Management is not visible on the weekends. Everything sort of just coasts with limited oversight. If there was an emergency at 2am and you got a call from your loved one, good luck getting thru to anyone in a leadership position. The staff does not know how to forward the calls. On a one on one basis, the caregivers are kind, caring, helpful. But if you do not have an advocate, your family member could be less protected then you might have been lead to believe. The computers in the library do not work, and yet there are help with computer classes on the schedule. There is a listing for a Rabbi coming, he has not been there in 6 months, There is no PA system so no one can hear. Everything is corporate bottom line. The place functions on a shoe string just trying to get by. I would question everything, monitor everything, double check everything and make surprise visits to find out what is really going on here.

nice facility, some room for improvement

We have had some issues lately with them not delivering on some of the services they provide. For example, the laundry service has really fallen behind our expectations recently. It is a very nice facility. They are remodeling right now (painting the hallways, redoing the carpeting, etc.) and I know it will all look really nice when done. The staff for the most part tries very hard. Unfortunately it just seems like there have been a few things that we have had to continuously have to get onto them about. Issues with her meds, issues with the laundry, etc.
