Be Vigilant

If you stay on top of management and the staff, almost to the point of making yourself a nuisance, it might not be so bad. My mothers room was cleaned on a daily basis; however, the floor was sticky, and I always found accumulated dust. The caregivers were excellent at washing her clothes, folding them and putting them away. The aids are very friendly, as are the nurses. Nonetheless, we had an unfortunate incident to occur. Even though the "main" nurse stated that there would be a full investigation, nothing was ever done, as I recently found out. The executive Director had no idea that an injury, a very serious injury, had taken place. Additionally, the food that was bragged upon as being so delicious was sadly lacking. There are people employed there who are actually loving, caring, and kind. I just don't think this was a good fit for my mom. It felt like they wanted us in there just to get our money rather than actually taking adequate care of her.

Location was the main reason we chose this facility, it's close to home. But we are not satisfied with the care and are actually moving our loved one to another facility. He's just not getting the quality of care that we expected and the facility does not fit his needs. Cleanliness is average. But it's not as clean as it should be. We've had things get lost also. I feel it is too expensive. The staff is friendly, but promises aren't always kept. Housekeeping isn't done often enough. It's definitely not a great setting for someone who isn't able to talk or engage. I don't think I would recommend them.

Shelby Gardens Place

I don't feel that this community has helped my loved one. it also doesn't seem like the staff are regularly taking the initiative to care for their needs. I believe that if I don't take notice of things, it won't be done. the CNA's are friendly and helpful, they do extend a helping hand when asked. there may not be enough employees to show extra attention to my loved ones needs; they aren't always available when my loved one needs attending to. they have not been getting my loved one out of the bed or maintaining their hygiene unprovoked. I have been working closely with [names removed] to hopefully bring in a physical therapist or someone who can get my loved one up and about throughout the day.

Shelby Gardens Place felt more like a nursing home. They don't separate their residents by their abilities. Everyone is together, regardless of what sate of mind or health issues. And the room they showed us was tiny. But the staff was so nice.

I would tell others that to make sure you are being an advocate for your loved one. There are times that I have to make sure that my loved one is being well cared for, and be on top of the staff. My loved one doesn't care for the food here..

[name removed] and the office staff were very welcoming! [name removed] took the time to gather information on Mom and what we were looking for as a family for Mom. It is nice that residents get to "age in place" at the same location and the increased care is provided. The one floor building plan is very easy to navigate and brings residents to the "central area' for activities and dining. The actual resident rooms are one big room; which would not meet our Mom's needs.

My Review of Devon House

The staff were friendly to me. My loved one was sent to the hospital due to a fall. They gave us clothes that weren't my loved one's after my loved one's passing. There were times that my loved one didn't have clothes of her own when visiting the doctor. There were missing items and we have never gotten those back still.

A smaller community setting, not without issues

Devon House is a relatively small, family-run assisted living facility, and its pros and cons are probably typical of such an operation. Pros: a smaller community, more personal interactions between residents and staff, less corporate structure and fewer rigid rules, reasonable pricing that does not vary with residents' needs, good "home-cooked" food served in a community setting. Cons: steady turnover of staff (rapid turnover rate of head nurse position particularly concerning), little to no security to keep outsiders from coming into and leaving the facility (fortunately it is located in a nice neighborhood), no formal memory care program (the sole activities facilitator focuses her efforts on those who are most capable of participating, leaving a sizable sub-population of residents in their rooms), varying competency of aides (some of whom were wonderful), which can result in inconsistency of care, particularly for those residents who are no longer capable of self-toileting/bathing, absolutely constant call bells and buzzers sounding. In sum, Devon House is a good landing spot for an individual or couple who need some assistance, especially with meals, and will benefit socially from living within a small community; in my opinion it may not be a good match for those with greater needs, particularly those with advancing dementia.

Improvements Needed

It has been an adjustment process for my father with his move to this community. He seems to be doing better now. Overall there is some room for improvement in this community. They are under staffed, and to hire more staff members. For the staff that is there, some are better than others. Overall this community needs to make some improvements.

Nice but could be better

I do have to say that the staff was very nice and some truly stood out as going above and beyond . I was not pleased with the size of the memory care unit. The other areas are large and comfortable but the common/living area in memory care is small and in fact, there is not enough seating for the residents. Often, the staff has to bring in kitchen chairs and many residents cannot see the television due to lack of space. There is an atrium area that no one seems to use and could be better utilized for this space issue. Also, there are HUGE potholes in the entrance road. While I understand our winters cause this, it seems some temporary solution could be made. As the cost is $5000 per month, one would think it should be a little more upscale. In comparing other assisted living facilities, Orchard Heights, in my opinion, does have more assistance for those that need more care.

Our experience

When we were looking they prided themselves on being a facility that had a better staff to residents ratio than the state required, but they do not have enough staff to maintain the level of care that my loved one requires. They all seem to be very nice people who care and are concerned about the residents, but I wish we would have known they were short staffed. We feel that we are paying for a lot of services that we are not able to utilize

NOT BAD, BUT NOT RIGHT FOR MY FATHER

Started off good, but there was nothing for the memory care people to do really. My father refused to socialize and was angry all the time. They let him stay in bed and his heel wound that was almost healed up when he got there got bad again and never did heal up. His room was always dirty and there was a stinky diaper up on a shelf that we found when we moved him out. He wasn't made to use his cane or walker and he fell numerous times. People were very nice, but there was a feeling of animosity between the workers and the people in charge.
