Needs improvement from top down

This has been a very big change in our lives especially my mom. Unfortunately she thinks all these places are the same. The staff are not held accountable to do their jobs properly or well. They are often rude and seem out out to help mom with her needs. They throw her clothes on the floor rather than putting them in the laundry bag provided. The food is advertised as delish and fresh- it's far from. It's often chewy, covered in gravy- hardly fresh. The upper management is mediocre- which may explain the aids attitudes. With the exception of a select few- the staff are not that nice and appear lazy at work. This place is very very expensive and it blows my mind at the quality of care. We are considering moving

Much better choices in the lehigh valley

I chose this community against my better judgement because they were willing to take her immediately from an out of state rehab facility.I realized the first week my mom's care was temporarily above what they expected, but the check I wrote them over rode any trepidations they had. Call bell answer times averaged 1:15. A few absolutely wonderful CNA'S, but shorthanded every shift. Why are the people giving the bulk of care earning $15 an hour? My mom is now at another facility and thriving.

Would not recommend.

My mom came in they said at a care level of 6+. They are unequipped to give that level of care, and it showed. During her two weeks there, she nearly died, and we removed her to another facility after her emergency room care.

I would tell them not to send a loved one here honestly. It wasn't a good experience from the start. Heather Heights can improve on hiring friendlier staff who actually want to help the elderly.

Local Staff Are Good, Regional Staff Needs Overhaul

We didn't find the head nurse to be competent with our loved one, as they wanted to run additional tests. Once we moved our loved one to the new community the new community couldn't find our loved one's medication sent from Shelby Gardens. The administrator didn't have control of the nursing staff or was telling us they don't deal with any of the nursing staff at all. The community couldn't find my loved ones records for two days to provide the family, or to fax to the new community. The new community had to pick these records up from Shelby Gardens. It seemed that the Executive Director was trying; however, also seemed her hands were tied about a lot medical issues. The sales pitch we received felt like a bill of goods. No one above the Executive Director has reached out to the family to speak to us about our experience, after requests were made.

Never put your parent here

Take note of all the residents sleeping in the hallways, sleeping in the front living room area. This place likes to medicate their residents. They put my Mom on a medication without getting my permission. She had her ring her wallet and several items of clothing disappear the first week. She fell and had a sub dermal hematoma due to the med change. I immediately moved her out of this facility! The new one that she has been in the last two years has been good. My advice would be to never put your parent here!

Older facility in desperate need of renovation. The elevator was out for 4 days during February 2015 residents had to be transported by wheel chair to dining room for all three meals. No camera surveillance to support security program in the buildings. Very under staffed to care for large number of residents that have mobility issues. Building has several challenges with mobility issues. Meals are ok - not much variety alot of processed food.

Not as Expected and Not Able to Care for My Loved One

I would suggest you look elsewhere for communities. My loved one wasn't receiving fluids to drink with their meals. The room was not clean, and clothes on the ground. I would inform the staff that my loved one was cold and to use sweaters to help my loved one stay warm and this didn't happen due to dirty clothes. There was a time that my loved one had an eye infection, and I let the staff know about this, and there was nothing done by the staff. My loved one was sitting in soiled clothes. The community didn't place my loved one in adult briefs. There was a time that my loved one fell due to trying to get items that were too far from my loved one's bed. There was another day that my loved one fell again, so a total of two times in a short amount of time. This may have happened due to the community being short staffed. I don't fell my loved one is safe in the community, and needs a higher level of care that the community isn't able to provide.

Don't do it!

Hindsight is 20/20 and if I could do it all over again, I would not have put my mother here. The care is sub-par and the nursing/aides staff is not much better. My mother required "enhanced care" and although I paid extra for it, she didn't receive it even after speaking to the Nursing Director multiple times. DO NOT PUT YOUR LOVED ONE HERE!

Review for Shelby Garden Place

Very dirty in the memory care part. My mom broke her hip really badly there and went downhill after that. But we moved her out of there as soon as she went to the hospital. Think she slipped on a rug in the bathroom that was not hers and should have never been there. I would say never put anyone in the memory care part. Other part might be ok.

Our Experience

I hate to bash Trustwell at Shelby Gardens Place, but most of the staff is incompetent (few good). The food was sub par, but the worst is that my mom ended up in the ER because they constantly let her fall by forcing her to get up. She died a month later and no one seemed to understand that she just wanted to lay in the bed.

Unable to judge the meals and dining as well as the activities. My wife got a terrible black eye while there, they said she tripped, I know that she didn't because it was only her eye. If I could prove it I would sue and have you shut down. I feel sure there were no cameras , I'm still considering legal action.

Our Experience

My mother needed more care than what was made available. Their mental health was ignored and it was a very traumatic experience for them to leave their home and try to adapt to assisted living. It may be an ok placement for relatively capable people, but didn't provide the support or safety that my parents needed.

Don't be fooled

On entering, everything appears pleasant and nice. Walk down the halls of memory care unannounced. You will find patients in soiled garments, patients stuck in front of the tv or just left in their room lying in bed. Unless you can feed yourself or have Hanukkah to assist- you won't eat. Patients were NEVER taken outside for the year and a half my mother was there. We had family with my mom every day and until she fell asleep at night to assure she was fed, gotten up in a chair and her toileting needs were met . State and the adult protective services had to be called due to the negligent care patients received. Management doesn't respond to any concerns. They act like they are listening and will talk with you and then do ZERO. Patients are malnourished, dehydrated and left in soiled undergarments. Do not send your loved one here.

They do not clean the rooms. They don't let you know if the are having any problems with your love one. My mother received bruises and scratches after being the for a week. I ended up taking her out. I visited my mother every day. She wasn't getting baths, her clothes were missing and they didn't tell me she was aggressive until I saw the bruises. I would not recommend Shelby Gardens Place to anyone.

Daughter in health care

I have worked in health care for 40+ years. My experience is in hospitals where every effort is made to keep patients safe and in an environment conducive to health & recovery. Recently, my mother had to be moved into memory care due to worsening dementia. We moved her to Shelby Gardens Place in Memphis. This has been an eye opening experience in so many ways. I did not realize that such places existed in the USA. The first impression of a small facility with various volunteers coming to sing, etc. that is quickly forgotten once you enter Memory Care.Besides the stench of urine, roaches climbing up the walls, patients sitting slumped over for hours without care, the staff is poorly trained. Basic infection control and humane care is missing entirely. Bowel movement smeared on linens with a plate of food on the bed is common for her roommate. Yesterday, the pt laid in floor for 2+hrs. yelling that she was cold & thirsty. Our five previous roommates have died. It's not a safe place.
